Yes I do have some breaking news, not to do with our club, but it will cause much debate, sadly my hands are tied today, but I believe I will get the nod to put the story up tomorrow, this will be before it appears in the sun newspaper, so check this thread later on Friday night.

Is it a "local interest" story?

All I can say is It concerns a football player who has been discussed on here before and I think some may not be to happy with the story when I can break it.

Is it "local celebrity seen camping on terraces next to manly hunk"?

Sorry Rob I really can't be drawn on this one, but you are way of the mark, until the decision is told to those who have to know tomorrow, I can' say a word, but I do now know that decision and really don't know how I feel about it.

I think it was a shock for the South Devon Registration Secretary A.Roach when he opened up his daily mail on Wednesday of this week, in with all the team sheets and transfer requests was one new player registration form.
It was a shock only because of the person who's name was on the request form, it was that of Luke McCormick. The form was sent in by Channing's Wood prison near Denbury and after careful consideration the registration secretary felt he should not process the request. He contacted the other officers in the SDL and it was agreed to contact the FA for guidance.
The FA was contacted at their head quarters in London and the concerns of the SDL were explained to the FA why it felt Luke McCormick should not be allowed to join the South Devon League as a player. The F.A. instructed the South Devon registration secretary to proceed and complete the paper work so Luke McCormick could become a registered player, this has now been completed and Luke McCormick is now a registered player for the Channing's Wood football team.
I have my own views on this and will post them on this thread some time later.

My personal feeling is that it is inherently wrong for someone to be judge and jury on how a prisoner spends their tariff. If McCormick was an accountant would it be expected that he was banned from doing maths? Channings Wood are accepted into the football fraternity in a spirit of goodwill and whatever one of their players - any player, has done to be in that establishment is of no business of anyone outside just what he is there for. It is for the Prison Governor to decide whether or not anyone is unsuitable for recreational activities in the community and his decision has to be respected. Because a prisoner is of a particular profession it does not warrant singling him out for ostracising, just as it wouldn't for any particular ethnicity or faith. When I lived in Devon I used to voluntarily go to both Channings Wood and HMP Dartmoor for internal sports activities and not once did I ever enquire just what any individual was inside for...................if they wanted to broach the subject - fine; but really it was none of my business but I can tell you there was a much higher profile football personality than McCormick in there during the time I was visiting, and I don't think he ever expressed a wish to play in SDL football.

I do agree with you Merse as he could well be playing along players that have done far worse, my feelings are that it is still so fresh in peoples minds & he is gaining enjoyment from playing football (which is his life & passion) when he should be serving time and being punished for what he has done. How do you think the childs parents feel knowing that he is carrying on as normal playing football, even though it's only the SDL. Maybe if it was a year down the line when but so soon I think is distasteful on behalf of prison

It was not the case of anyone being a judge or jury merse and you say "Channings Wood are accepted into the football fraternity in a spirit of goodwill" I really do not think that is the case anymore. Well with respect I think it is acting as judge and jury, and that is because the Registration Secretary does not know the circumstances of any other prisoner, neither does he know the personal history of any other registered player in the entire league. He only knows the circumstances of this prisoner through a third party (the media) and not that of other less high profile individuals. McCormick's crime wasn't that he killed and maimed, it was that he was in the condition that he was that led him to lose control. Now if he was Billy The Village idiot who got pissed on cider and committed bestiality and then went home and committed incest with his little sister, you would not know if he was one of the registered players because the very nature of his crime would have resulted in anonymity to protect the identity of his sister. "Billy" might already be registered with the SDL. Don't get me wrong, I am the father of young children myself; some years ago I endured the death of a young member of my family and the subsequent destruction and family break up that caused and had to struggle with the realization that the deceased had died of a condition instigated by the criminal activity of somebody who was never brought to justice - so to some extent I realise the daily and nightly trauma, grief and despair of that family................to lose one's child (children) is the ultimate nightmare, a never ending living hell. But it is not the role of the victim to administer justice in a civilised society, and it is not the role of those charged with that administration to do any other than ensure that the perpetrator of the crime fulfills his obligations to society without recourse to whatever their personal feelings or distaste are.......................our society is more humane and more civilised than that. I do not wish to post further on this thread...................please respect that when posting yourselves. Thankyou.

I would like to point out that it wasn't me on my own that refused to register Luke McCormick from the outset, I sought advice from my fellow officers of the SDL first & it was a unanimous decission that the SDL would not accept his registration until we had sought FA advice on the situation as the SDL didn't want to gain any bad press from this situation. We duly sought that advice and have taken note of what the FA have said & duly registered Luke. As Registration Secretary I have the power to refuse a registration to the SDL, but I put my personal reason's aside and have put my football administration head on and proceeded with his registration as I cannot & will not let personal issues get in the way. I appreciated the fact that we have 30 other convicted prinsoners also playing football & we cannot discriminate against Luke in any way at all just because of who he is.

I was maybe the only person who posted on the Luke McCormick thread, who showed some pity on him as a person. I took the view that he did not set out to hurt anyone and would I thought, have to live with the guilt and the fact he had ruined his own life by a reckless and stupid act.
I did agree with all the other posters that his sentence was far to short and he should have had to pay a much higher price for his actions that the seven years he got, as we all know it will end up around three and a half years. Having watched some TV coverage and listening on the radio as well, the real painful story of the parents of the boys who were killed, it hit home so much more how their lives have been ruined and that they may never ever get over what has happened.
I have been inside this prison with Ant on many occasions and got to talk with many of the inmates, all I found were fine to talk too, you do not get hardened killers at Channing's Wood prison. One thing they came over loud and clear, was just what a privilege it is to get into the football team.
You have to have been on best behavior and not just for five Min's, so Luke has not even reached the criteria of what all other inmates need to do, to even be considered. They have wanted him only because of the keeper he was before he went in.
Its my own view that Luke McCormick needs to have far more time to reflect on his actions on that fateful night and should not be looking to get back into playing football at any level just yet. He is young and can worry about playing again, once he has done his time and not before.
