Not seen this photo printed anywhere myself. Looks like its taken in front of the old Barton Road cricket pavilion. Am guessing sometime between 1905-1910. I did read that the pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1906 so can anyone shed any light on this one ?

Any chance you can reset the photo? My maternal grandfather played for TUFC before WW1 and may be in it. He's not one of the three in view though!
Thanks

I did read that the pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1906 so can anyone shed any light on this one ? Wow! Where did you find that one gullone? I agree with your thinking. The fire (Webb was club president at the time - I kid you not) was in March 1906 and was discussed here : torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/7296/football-torquay-1862?page=2United played the 1905/06 season on the other side of the road (near what is now the junction of Parkhurst Road and Cricketfield Road). They returned to the Cricket Ground after the pavilion had burned down. That would seem to date this photo to the 1904/05 season. The one face I can easily identify is back right - the famous W.J. Luscombe himself. He could tell you the year the photo was taken - but not necessarily the right year the photo was taken! Some seasons the Torquay Times mentioned dates when team photos were taken, but I don't think they did that season. Would love to put names to the photo. A few vaguely familiar faces and a few I have never seen before. Can anyone spot players the same in this photo* and one from the following season? torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/11700/tufc-pic-1905*I need to find the original and put on IMGUR rather than Photobucket.

Thanks I don't know why, but when I view recent posts I can see the whole photo. When I go the thread itself, I see what Gateman describes. This would have been before Grandfather McBrearty's United days. When not heroically attempting to rescue drowning children, he played for Argyle*, then the Daddyhole Plain version of Torquay United, then Babbacombe. Have a look on the wall of the corridor between Boots & Laces and the Gulls Nest and you will see a team photo from a year or two before he joined United (Daddyhole version). torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/7494/torquay-united-1911-12*Don't worry. It was Petitor Argyle not Plymouth!!!

Thanks for the link and info Jon. I have had the photo for years but only recently tried to date it and expected it might well be in one of the clubs history books. Its not a press photo and its in too good a condition to be the original imo. I have recently re read the small 48/49 and 49/50 handbooks and i had forgotten they both contain some fascinating chapters of history.

Just remember that those handbooks contain what Bill Luscombe thought he remembered - which is not the same as what actually happened. I have just about reconciled the two - but with a few issues still left to understand.
