After a confidence boosting point on the road albeit, one that will have taken a physical toll on the players with 10 men for the majority of the game, we now have a home fixture just 48 hours later against old rivals Woking. After controversially having Woking knock us out of the FA trophy, we got some measure of revenge with the league double over them and this match will be the fourth encounter between the sides in just six months. Another league win will really get the season started and while we have shown our defensive resilience, more attacking fluidity will need to be on display. It may be that fitness will determine to some extent the starting lineup with such a short/insane turnaround. Nice to see that both CLE and Hall are now fit to play again and I wonder if either will be fit enough to start? Surely Martin has earned a first start to follow up a good debut on Saturday with Moxey continuing to cover for the suspended Omar and maybe a first bench selection for Slough? TUFC preview - don’t forget. no tickets on sale after 2pm.

One of those games where it is case of who is good for 90 minutes, who is good for 60/70 minutes, who is good for 20/30 minutes, then put the pieces together to make the jigsaw.
Woking won’t make it easy for us. No point complaining if they try to break the flow of the game up as that is exactly what we did to County.
We desperately need the three points - I am not too fussed how we get them. Four points from Bank Holiday weekend would be a great return, but two points would be a poor one.
Come on you Yellows!

link - united team now out. Hall, CLE and Martin come in for Omar, Lapslie and O’Connell. Will be interesting to see how that translates into our set up….

Looks to be a strong line up with Asa and Connor starting and both wingers on the bench along with Lapslie. Looking sparse in central defence - what would we do if Lewis became unavailable? - wouldn't be surprised if GJ makes a signing in that dept soon.
One or two rested after a tough and draining encounter and a long journey home - we must be ultra cautious with tight and not fully recovered muscles today.

Lapslie aside, this is probably our strongest available line up and we are making Woking look like Chelsea. Shambles so far. No defensive cover on the bench, and little firepower either. Loan signings needed if possible.

Very fortunate to go in two down. Woking could and should have had six.

Glad I couldn't make it today sounds like another disastrous performance and yet another sending off after the heroics at Notts, that's pretty bloody poor.
My worst fears are materialising sadly - the play off final defeat has taken a huge lump out of the club in more ways than one.
As I asked a few weeks ago after our encouraging pre season - better squad or worse squad than last year? I think we all know the answer to that one already... From optimism to utter dejection in less than ten days..

I don't usually worry about the league table until 10 games have been played. Not sure that works this season.Clearly a hangover from last season. Hope we get a couple of decent loan signings soon.

Were you ever optimistic petef? 😉😉 About 54 years ago when we dominated a season, nearly got promotion from the old division three to what is now the Championship and threw it away in the last weeks of the season. The following season we lost many of our best players to Bournemouth, our manager to Leicester City - the rest is history. Could be another fifty years we have to suffer this league or lower that's the reality of missing the boat a few months ago.

You're spot on petef, last season was our big chance and it seems we are now destined to go into another era of mediocrity.

A total and utter shambles today as bad as anything I have ever witnessed at Plainmoor. You cast your mind back to other pathetic displays I have seen like the 7-3 defeat when Dean Edwards was in charge for one game But this was when the club had no money and was trying to survive for its very existence. But this is with Gary Johnson as manager and I guess he has had a reasonable budget to build a team. The club might be over £3 million in debt but it is fairly stable. So what I witnessed today was inexcusable. Torquay were 2-0 down after 4 minutes and it should have been 5 or 6 in the opening period. There were several other last ditch saves by defenders and keeper. Yet again we went down to 10 men for the second successive game in the first half so the game was effectively over after 23 minutes. I lost count of our number of bookings and players like Little were a little fortunate to stay on the pitch.
Woking absolutely murdered us and they have a team of giants and they can play a bit. We are a bunch of has-beens with their best days behind them or youngsters who are trying to find their level. There are no players in their prime, we are too physically small and weak, we have little flair or pace, and so we just resort to lumping the ball up to Wright. It is dinosaur tactics to watch this season. Our keeper is not tall or commanding enough like Covolan, he did improve as the match went on and ended up as sponsors MOTM. But it is a big, physical league and not the type of keeper for this level.
The only bit of quality today was the run and shot from outside the box by Rogers that crashed off the crossbar. At least he offered something other than utter dross when he came on. The same could be said of O'Connell who made some decent runs when he came on. Lolo at least tried when he came on as anything was better than semi-retired Holman who does not get a look in. Perhaps that is a little harsh as the strikers were having to deal with long aimless ball all afternoon. Little is no captain material.
Johnson should hang his head in shame for that sorry performance. It showed to me that the Altrincham loss was not a one-off. If the season carries on like this his position will be untenable. I cannot think of one player he has brought in this season that has improved the squad. What awful and lazy recruitment relying on players that did the business a few years ago with Cheltenham. It is a squad totally ill-equipped to handle this league.
Off the pitch is just as bad. What an awful decision it was to stop selling tickets an hour before kick-off. Is it any co-incidence that our two home gates so far have been average at best. It is obvious this decision is turning hundreds of casual supporters away. People have other things to do in their lives as well, you know, and if there is hassle getting tickets they simply won't go. There was a really ugly incident in the Family stand as well. Some Torquay fans just cannot take to losing. There was a really nasty looking Torquay supporter mouthing off at some Woking fans nearby and urging the stewards to remove them. My understanding speaking to someone at half-time is that a family with both Torquay and Woking allegiances paid a lot of money to buy a box in the family stand and I dare say the Woking supporters supported their team. This went on for quite a while in the first half with the stewards unsure what to do. It all got ugly and unsavory. A young boy near me was crying and moved seats with his mum. I cannot see them coming back. Torquay supporters need to grow up a bit and take losing better instead of aiming their frustrations at anyone connected to the opposition in a nasty way. The previous game there was abuse and name calling aimed at Altrincham's directors. I don't mind banter but this is unpleasant.
After reading on this forum what some supporters were shouting at Cameron at Notts County and also what I witnessed at Ashton Gate with the Hartlepool fans invading the pitch at full time and goading us and hurling missiles I fear a nasty element in the supporters has returned. Or has it ever gone away? I thought this sort of thing belonged to the 1980's but clearly not. Sport should be for entertainment and supporting your team as well as being generous in defeat. Now we have come out of lock down and attending matches again I have probably forgotten all this nasty stuff and naively thought that going to a football match is fun.
Well putting this all together I will not be attending Plainmoor for a while. I go to matches to see Torquay giving a good account of themselves on the pitch and to enjoy a reasonably friendly atmosphere. I have better, more enjoyable things to do on my Saturday afternoons. I will not be returning until there is a marked improvement both on and off the pitch.

I think that was a low under the Johnson era today with the game effectively over after 25 minutes, combining the poor starts in the previous two games to be both two goals and a man down. We were lucky not to concede more as we continued to push forward in search of a goal and left acres of space at the back and a team better than Woking would have run up a cricket score.
We conceded very early on after CLE seemed to have been clearly fouled while controlling the ball from a clearance and as the players were appealing for a foul Woking got away down the right and crossed to their striker at the far post who had a free header between our two defenders to score an easy goal eerily reminiscent of the opening goal conceded against Altrincham on the opening day of the season.
Things got worse shortly after when a poorly delivered free kick to the edge of our area was scuffed by CLE with the ball spinning out to the side of the area and a Woking player was able to then float a cross in for another easy header on the edge of the six yard box which Halstead was unable to keep out.
So once again two down at home very early doors and the players tried to step up a gear with very little impact. Johnson on the right wing picked up a very harsh yellow which initially received a round of applause after winning back the ball and the referee seemed happy with it but the lino flagged for a foul which I could just see the reasoning for as there was some contact but never a yellow for his first foul. Unfortunately his inexperience showed through as instead of reining back his play he then lunged for the ball again and while there was minimal contact, the ref deemed it to be a second yellow, one of those that could have gone either way.
So the match meandered on with us trying to push forward to little effect and when Woking managed to score again earlier in the second half the game really was over and it was only a surprise that they didn’t score more with the fourth goal deep in injury time. A few highlights in the second half, applause for Hall when his long range shot, albeit straight to their keeper may have been our first meaningful effort on target. Little had a great chance to score when an under hit back pass left their keeper short but he had little confidence going round the keeper and the ball was cut out with loads of space to run onto it. Rogers came on and while he is by no means the finished product did fire off one of his gigantic long-range shots which beat the keeper but in fortunately didn’t dip enough and ricocheted off the bar.
Much work for Johnson to do but he has shown time and time again that he can turn things around. Personally thought we were set up wrong having a 442 formation with CLE on the left wing and Johnson on the right, neither out and out wingers. Very little fluidity in our play and the only service to the strikers was the long ball which is not the right approach to this Woking defence. Only consolation is that Buckle had a poor start in his promotion season after a play off loss and we need a win to get our confidence up and running.
