link - With the National League having met today to discuss what next, Brent Pilnick gives his thoughts on some of the issues and options for the National League - nice that he thought that any team down to Torquay had a chance of a late promotion push.

link - I see that the National League is giving it’s clubs until Friday to come up with ideas on promotion and relegation before it makes a decision next week.

link - however, 2 promotion places only available to EFL if they complete their season. Sounds like one available otherwise so good news for Barrow?

Assuming Barrow take the place vacated by Bury in the EFL, wouldn't be surprised to see Bury in the NPL whenever it restarts. Bury may have been out of action for a few months but not now at any greater economic disadvantage than the rest of the league.

Very tricky ask though, no right or easy decision to make, null and void season may be the only fair way ahead.

link - £200 million black hole in EFL finances by September. Piling on the pressure to restart sooner than later... Elsewhere the National League is meeting today to discuss holding the play offs which will be put out to the clubs for their comments and vote.

Currently there is a deadline of June 1 for this to be resolved but if any further play is necessary then an extension will be required.

link- I see from elsewhere that when it comes to the play offs what is good for the national league is also good for the north and south divisions. This could potentially impact on the teams in the NL relegation places as I assume there is no relegation from the North and South so not feasible to treat each step exactly the same. My gut feeling is that this will make the play offs less likely to happen but literally anything goes in this environment!

There is only one sensible way to deal with this and that is to declare the National League season null and void across all three divisions, no promotion, no relegation. It is up to the EFL whether they want to start next season (whenever that will be) a team short or whether they choose to invite an individual National League club to join them next season.

I think you are right. The latest rumblings seem to be that the majority of league one and two clubs now appear to be in favour of ending the season as the cost of testing and implementing the various safety measures are in the millions and completely unaffordable without help from the higher echelons which as usual does not appear to be forthcoming. If that is the case then the National League decision is decided. From a Torquay perspective, a null and void is not the worst timing. We underperformed in the season due to the sheer amount of injuries and our young side got much valuable experience at this level under their collective belts. Imagine if this virus had come along a year earlier !!!!!!!! Football is very likely to be restarting soon at the top end of the game and the lower leagues will have to work out how and when they will be able to follow but starting a new.

link - EFL now following a similar process to the National League with various meetings this week. If as widely expected leagues 1 & 2 do not complete the season then will impact on our league. If this situation had arisen earlier in the season then think we would have reached a resolution much quicker to void the season but 80% of games played is enough for some to look at ways of finishing or extrapolating the season.

I suppose another obstacle on the horizon is the announcement by the chancellor that from August employers are going to be asked to make contributions to their furloughed employees pay. I can't honestly see any prospect of football being played in front of paying spectators returning by that time and cannot see how many, if indeed any clubs below the premier league are going to be able to retain their players, let alone their non-playing staff. And what happens to players currently under contract if their clubs can't pay them? Any arguments going on now about who should or should not be promoted are merely academic until we know who will still be standing when football actually returns.

link - looks like there is a split at league 1 level about ending the season as you reach a level where the economics hit a wall but those larger clubs are still pushing for promotion.

While the issue of promotion and relegation have not been resolved they are looking to stage the play offs which suggest promotion and relegation will be undertaken with the impact on our league. Of local interest, Plymouth are in an automatic promotion spot while Exeter would end up in the play offs after a poor run of form pre lockdown but could have at least a couple of extra games to play.
