At the end of the day It's all about assessing a new squad gaining match fitness, confidence and momentum going into what promises to be a very tough season. The days of the really big clubs coming to Plainmoor for pre-season are in the past it seems and I have always been doubtful if its beneficial to see your team stuffed and outclassed before a ball is kicked in the contest that really matters. And to add if the players do actually raise their game a little, perform well and get a result it can lull everyone into a false sense of confidence. Better to compete against teams of a slightly higher or similar level to get a true picture. Remember all to well the recent WBA pre-season freindly I think we won 2-1 with a wonder strike from Brett Williams. Now how did that season turn out? No reason at all why these games shouldn't be competitive and entertaining and knowing GJ he will know exactly how to prepare his troops for the challenges ahead.

link - I see that Dan Feasey has agreed a move to Exeter but is being allowed to stay until we have a replacement lined up.

What is wrong with our neighbours! First that lot down the road snaffle one of our Phyco's, and then that lot up the road snaffle tother...talk about kicking a fella when he's down!

What do you mean good news...they stole him from us because of our situation, and you're thanking them!

link - another consideration to think about during the preseason period are the various rule changes. As I mentioned on the women’s World Cup thread, Scotland were knocked out of this competition due to their keeper not leaving at least one foot on the line and having the penalty retaken. Anyway, some of Johnson’s thoughts in the link above.

They were allowed to jump or move side to side, but not allowed to step over the line till kick taken.

The recent change in this rule is actually in the keepers favour as they now only have to have one foot on or above the line. The issues at the Women's World Cup have come about because this rule is actually being enforced whereas the officials previously turned a blind eye to it. The introduction of VAR has contributed as it is something that's easily picked up on the TV replays, although it seems players don't get punished for encroachment in the same way for some reason.

They have been getting yellow cards, Jerry. Just not in knockout stage penalty shootouts after IFAB changed that ruling after the first few disallowed penalties and yellow cards in this tournament.
