Whats new? Pre-season has always been this way - disjointed and unpredictable. If you even have the slightest bit of football knowledge and common sense you would perhaps understand that Its all about getting players match fit and developing understandings not meaningless results - that doesn't happen overnight. The manager has had to virtually rebuild from scratch and I have no doubt we will have a better season than we have had the last two. Whether we can get near the sharp end is another matter. The negativity displayed both here and on other social media and forums is totally depressing. When there's something to genuinely moan and groan about I will no doubt add some hopefully constructive criticism. I'm not going to get involved in a slanging match with someone who makes such comments about other posters but I cannot let your remarks pass without replying. I think after watching football for 70 years I have picked up some knowledge of the game, even if most of that was watching Torquay United. So to infer I don't have the slightest bit of football knowledge is rather far off the mark. ( Oh dear, I hear you say; Another of those silly old codgers who stand on the popside shouting horrible things at the shit players on the pitch in front of them). I think I may have even more common sense than yourself as you weren't at the game and myself and Simonb were, so I think we have more direct knowledge of what took place than you do. You only have to look at the photo of our "manager" after the game on the OS and the comments he made to see he wasn't best pleased either. You mention about getting players fit and developing understandings. Presumably this doesn't apply to Tiverton as they must have been fully match fit and have a complete understanding as a team before the pre season started which would explain why they were better than us in every department. Only a few days before they had only lost to Plymouth Argyle 1st team 1-2. We were totally outclassed, outplayed and out thought by more skillful players who showed more spirit than most of ours. Believe me, unless there is a huge improvement by the time the league starts we will be in big trouble. We'll be lucky to get a goal, let alone a win. I rest my case.

Ok I surrender atheringtongull - were going to have another crap season, the players Nicholson signed are useless and we will be struggling at the bottom again. Its all about opinions mine is we don't get negative before a ball is kicked in real anger. I would have thought after watching 70 seasons of this crap you would realise that one poor or one exceptional pre-season result or performance doesn't dictate a season. Last year we beat WBA and were undefeated in all of our friendlies and just how did our season turn out? I watched the game on Wednesday and saw much positive about. What did you think of Wednesdays performance? You and Simonb may well be right and we will continue to struggle but just for now I much prefer to be positive until proved otherwise when and after the real competition begins. There's been enough negativity around the place for far to - time to turn the corner and look forward instead of backwards.. I rest my case...

I won't make any judgement on the team until early September. I've been going up United since the early 70's and know not to make any rash judgements to soon. Preseason is exactly that, the hard stuff starts when United are playing; say Hartlepool away and it's peeing it down and they are 1 up with 30 minutes to go. That's when team spirit and player's who have to dig deep to pull off a win come into play. I'll be up Plainmoor for the game v Pilgrims to have a gander but won't take it to seriously.

Having missed the last 2 PSF are we any nearer to a recognised C.F. and winger?
Dare say I've missed the announcement when are the season tickets available?

Superb news as King Kev demonstrates his strong and decisive management in not wasting a moment longer in getting James Gray signed up. If ever there was a player who is the very definition of 'guaranteed goals' as we build up to the new season, it has been James. A veritable goal machine for us during his trial period, and hitting the back of the net with such frequency was bound to attract the notice of rival clubs. King Kev, again given full backing by Clarke Osborne, has been able to bring out the contract and pen, to make sure this goalscorer extraordinaire didn't get lured away, but would be continuing to demonstrate his mastery in front of goal for Gulls fans. And a possibly revealing comment from King Kev as well : “If he keeps up his work ethic, he is the type of player that our fans will take to, and the kind of guy that will do well in our environment'. Alluding perhaps, to those who don't keep up their work ethic for very long at all after they've signed a juicy contract. That fans took to less and less as yellow cards increased and effort decreased, and where an environment in which you were expected to put in a decent shift for the team didn't much appeal ? Our experienced and skilled defence now complemented by a lethal attack....and the midfield doesn't look half bad either. All set fair as the squad strengthening continues...and the Fake News scare stories become a distant memory.

Sniffer Gray signs on the dotted line, good news. Not saying he's a poacher in front of goal but its rumoured he once nicked the penalty spot!!

A lower league journeyman with something to prove - swells the squad numbers to 18 - suspect there will not be many further additions? Still, a new stadium in 2020 and a new training complex in 2021. It's all going so well.

That's an interesting find Pete, and better to hear that those fans at least thought Gray was a decent player rather than them saying 'good riddance'. It's obvious that Gray hasn't always helped himself over the last couple of years, though I suppose it was the spider more at fault for biting a chunk out of his arm. He's been given a reasonable opportunity down here to get things back on track, and it would be nice to see him make the most of it. Incidentally if anyone is tempted to click on the 'Neighbour from Hell' sent back to jail' link, that is among those just above the fans comments...here's a snippet: Alex Mann, prosecuting, said Seed had been made subject to the suspended sentence on July 5 and the next breach was committed the very next day. Mrs Mann said as Caroline Maxwell returned home with her two teenage children Seed started making "sexual groaning" noises and called her "easy knickers."

Classic "damaged goods in need of rehabilitation". Let's hope that he can use us to relaunch his career.

Squad; My guess is Fallon will be signed on. Big guy target man, can score ( proven) and experienced at many levels. Can give Kev a hand in the management department ( contacts).Could start then at the 60 / 70 bring off if circumstances are right. Two more friendlies to go news will then follow. Or I could be completely wrong!!!

Think you're probably right re Fallon, jj. If he has the goal of getting in shape for a crack at the NZ squad we may be picking up the ice cream man for next to nothing.

I'd guess the same way as you jj. Fallon has had a long career making good money. Now he's making further millions with his entrepreneurial Ice Cream empire. He's not coming to us needing to earn some cash to pay the rent. He's 35, he's unfit, he was hardly outstanding at an even lower level last season....so he realises that he needs to pay us in tubs of artisan ice cream should we allow him to join....rather than expect to get much more than petrol money from us.
If Fallon is serious about attempting to make the New Zealand squad for the World Cup, then he'll need to be the most dedicated member of our squad. He must realise the amount of work required, and having an experienced International level pro like him being the first one in for training each day, would be just the sort of example that Kev would want the younger squad members to see. Contrast that with another trialist or two this Summer that, reading between the lines, didn't display the type of attitude that our Manager is looking for.
King Kev played, and contributed an awful lot to the successful 'Sills team'. Last season when bringing in a big target man for a few games, Kev proved that he could get the goals flowing from Kieffer Moore where Forest Green or Mick McCarthy couldn't. So Kev clearly fancies having the option of having a big centre forward, and possibly thinks he can get the best out of such a player where others might fail. We've no transfer window to worry about. So if our Head of Recruitment spots the new Tommy Lawton somewhere in a months time then we can still sign him, and explain to Rory Fallon that his World Cup fitness quest must continue elsewhere. Though if we're paying him less than the price of my season ticket, let him stay and contribute his experience and know how. After all, King Kev and Robbie Herrera specialised in the defensive side of the game. Fallon's knowledge can be an asset, and it's almost certainly available for a bargain price.
