It has been a fair bit but our team are on the television again and for those without bt sport, a trip down to Plainmoor is an option with it on in the Gulls Nest! Not sure how many will actually attend the match itself, top attendance up there this season was 916 when Wrexham came a visiting with 442 being the nadir! In fact, Alfreton have only played in front of 1000+ three times this season, the biggest of these being 3619 on the bank holiday where they were walloped 7-0! How will they fare in front of the cameras? And for that matter, how will we?
Alfreton have been more down than up this season, losing their first seven games before a draw against Altrincham followed by three successive wins against lower end sides got them going although they have lost their last three games.... Old friends are Lathaniel Rowe Turner, an industrious defender with one red and four yellows to his name already but hey ho, who are we to talk! Hawley has already got off the mark with one goal to his name but whether the law of averages means we will be safe for this one is a matter of conjecture! Top scorer for them is Joe Ironside, on loan from Sheffield United with four goals so far although had a bit of bad press from his manager this past weekend!
Hargreaves has a few inverse dilemmas for this match. In defence, we have a straight four available for this one. Does he get a loanee in or persevere we what he has (my preference). In attack, Ofori-Acheampong is back available but should be supplant Briscoe after an excellent second half performance there? Alternatively, if put on the wing, will he be better than Ajala there? Richards will also be back from suspension to complete one of the best midfield pairings in this division.
A game we should be looking to win but after Telford will need to be at our best to come back with all three points and keep in contact with the top of the division!

I'm really looking forward to seeing Jake Hutchings start. He is good enough and he is old enough - but it will be a big step-up from Rymans and Southern Premier level where he has played on loan.
We have got to set the club up to develop young players, but we as supporters can be guilty of being a little nervous of giving young players a chance. We'd rather see an experienced head in there.
This season, we have three decent and experienced centre-backs and so you could imagine Jake going the whole season without seeing action. If Angus had held on a few minutes more without getting booked, Downes would have been available to cover for him when he did get banned.
So a chance for our fourth choice centre-back. Let's hope he grabs the opportunity in the way that Richards and Ofori-Acheampong did when injuries and suspensions gave them an opportunity.
Bench cover is obviously a worry. Did I read somewhere that Harding has played a few games at centre-back, or have I imagined that?

linkMention here that Harding may be considered for in defence as well. In fact, on the podcast, all sorts of options are being looked at - so why is everyone looking past the obvious option? Thought Hutchings was very highly rated?

linkMention here that Harding may be considered for in defence as well. In fact, on the podcast, all sorts of options are being looked at - so why is everyone looking past the obvious option? Thought Hutchings was very highly rated? I do hope that if fully fit Hutchings is preferred at centre back to Harding, with Harding as cover on the bench for two positions. Expect that will happen and the lad is being kept on his toes accordingly. I notice also in that link that Hargreaves comments again on away travel arrangements that preceded our draw at Dartford and defeat to bottom club, Telford. Sounds like he may have lost that 'battle' for now with the Board, but fair play in still chipping away on it. I admire that and hope he wins 'the war' on it some time soon. “Anything below four-and-a-half hours is travel on the day, which means we have to get up at 6.30am to leave Torquay to get there,” he said. “We went to Dartford on the day and it was a nightmare – it was five-and-a-half hours and we drew 0-0. “We went to Telford on the day and lost, but then stayed overnight against Lincoln and won, and stayed overnight against Grimsby and won.” Although the early start will not be as bad this weekend, Hargreaves said early starts would have to become the norm for his squad if they were to reinvigorate their away form. “It’s not ideal, but we have to live with it,” he said. “It will be a bit later this Saturday, but the lads will have to get used to getting up at 6.30am. “And if we’re going to get up at those times, how do we react and how do we cope with it? “We have to try and develop ways to make sure that the players are prepared as best they can. All these details are very important. “It’s something that lots of sports stars talk about, waiting a long time for their events to start. At the end of it all, our fans don’t want to hear gripes – they just want to see the team out there winning games.”

Thought Hutchings was very highly rated? I'm really looking forward to seeing Jake Hutchings start. He is good enough and he is old enough... I hope Jon is right about this. He sounds pretty convincing. I'm not in a position to really comment about Jake Hutchings. I'm pretty sure he joined the club in 2012 and was immediately put forward (by whom?) as a "hot prospect". He made a brief appearance, ahead of his time, in the only pre-season friendly I saw prior to moving to Sheffield. I left with the player's name in mind and he seemed to be consistently getting a good press on one of the other Torquay United websites. Hutchings was quickly promoted to a full professional contract in January 2013. With the Herald Express reporting that "Premier League giants Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea (were) all circling overhead" it's hardly surprising we thought we had a talent on our hands. Thinking back, the signing of Hutchings on a professional contract would have been one of Martin Ling's final acts as manager. It's clear Ling, and Geoff Harrop, rated Hutchings very highly. I know little of the regard that Alan Knill and Chris Hargreaves have (had) for the player. Reports of Jake Hutchings' progress appear to have gone quiet but, hopefully, that's been more a reflection of (a) difficult times for the club and (b) that it's still extremely early days in the player's development. His spell at Grays last season was something of a "visit home" (there could have been all sorts of reasons for that to happen with a 17/18-year-old; perhaps too he was best away from the club at the time); Weymouth sounds to have gone well. We have got to set the club up to develop young players, but we as supporters can be guilty of being a little nervous of giving young players a chance. We'd rather see an experienced head in there. Which (sort of) comes back to Jon's earlier observation. If Jake Hutchings is good enough, he's old enough. That's what we all want, isn't it? Young players coming through and flourishing. I'd dearly like Jake Hutchings to be declared a roaring success by Saturday evening. It would represent another step forward all round. But, equally, I find myself trying to balance Hutchings' possible selection with what's best for the team in the context of a particular match when we're well-placed in the table. It's an age-old dilemma and one which, if you followed the logical conclusion, would never see young players making their first team debut. I'm torn. I don't know whether Hutchings is (yet) good enough; I've not the foggiest how Ben Harding would do in that position. What I do sense is that club and supporters alike are keen to gauge the effectiveness of the youth policy. I'd go as far as saying we're all becoming rather desperate to see a real breakthrough of some sorts. This needs judgement by the manager: not to bow to sentiment; not to kowtow to those who may have a keen interest in the selection of a young player; to do what is right for both player and team. But, in all honesty, I can't see that the club currently has a home-produced player aged twenty (or over) who is likely to make a career in the game. The main hopes appear to be Hutchings (nineteen in December) and Ives (eighteen next July). If Hutchings plays on Saturday, it'll move things on without being conclusive. If he doesn't play, that won't be conclusive either. But I sense he'll need some sort of opportunity later in the season especially with, I believe, his contract set to expire in June 2015. Or at least a good-quality loan, possibly a notch up from last season's. Then what happens if Jake Hutchings hasn't made a first-team appearance - or just a "one off" - by the time his contract is up? Amongst defenders, Ed Palmer was offered another deal in similar circumstances although, with him being from the South Hams, his position may have been different. Jake Hutchings is both from East London, where there is a plethora of clubs operating at different levels, and (as things stand) at a Conference club rather than one in the Football League. The club's status, at the time, could easily make a difference in the eyes of a nineteen-year-old (and those around him) as to whether to chance another year. It could also easily affect the club's decision at the same time. To extend the contracts of young players because they may cut it at Conference level? Or to make the decision to release them earlier because they're not going to make the breakthrough at the level we now operate? Throw in financial balancing act of contracts and, to an extent, it was forever thus. But it's also another indication that decisions need to be adjusted to our present, diminished status. I can't work out if this, in the longer-run, would result in the club giving young players the proverbial "less time" or "more time" than if we were at a higher level.

I haven't been able to make up my mind on what I think Chris should do, but seeing that even Barton Downs is undecided I feel a little better about my indecision. The only time I've seen Jake Hutchings play was in a half paced pre season friendly at Tiverton a few seasons back, when, if I remember rightly, he played as right back. I thought at the time that he looked like a 14 year old with the physique of a 14 year old, but the fact is that now he's not far short of his 19th birthday, and given the early promise which Barton mentions, many of us would have hoped that at a minimum he'd be up to Conference level by this age.
Reservations were expressed as to whether throwing Kirtys McKenzie in for the first time for a difficult away game at Vale Park was ideal, but he acquitted himself admirably on that occasion. But every individual is different, and just a few weeks ago with 3 more experienced centre backs to choose from, I doubt that Hargreaves was giving much serious thought to having to name Hutchings in a starting line up this season.
Chris's preference would most likely have been to recall Ives so that Cruise (match fit, up to Conference pace, and with a bit more experience) could move into the centre of the defence for this one match. If Chris still prefers to keep Jake out of the firing line for the time being then Ben Harding is the option. Harding has certainly got the stature for a central defensive man, but Chris knows from personal experience that central defence can be a very different kettle of fish from the midfield role.
Ideally I'd hope that Hutchings really is old enough and good enough, gets the nod and plays well tomorrow. I'm less confident that he will be selected and am most interested to see what final decision Chris makes on this. It's a difficult call with potential pitfalls whatever he decides.
Perhaps either Harding or Hutchings will fail to set their alarm clock properly, thereby failing to make the coach trip to Derbyshire, and solving the selection problem at a stroke.

Whoever is picked will be under pressure to perform so I'm not entirely sure an inexperienced Jake Hutchins is the right move . Surely a game with little riding on it would be preferable for him to show his worth and gain experience Only the manager will know what the best option is and I trust him entirely to make the right choice. If we let in a hat full as we did a fortnight a go at un-fancied Telford then the knives will be out for an "easy target".
You can also be 100% sure Alfreton will have done their homework on us and our lack of central defensive cover and are ready to exploit any weaknesses aided by a certain Karl Hawley who will no doubt, be out to prove a point.

It's an age-old dilemma and one which, if you followed the logical conclusion, would never see young players making their first team debut. Our unexpectedly good start makes it tougher to blood youngsters. I was expecting a mid-table campaign - but was keen to see us really give youth a chance and play attractive football. Constant promotion battles and relegation struggles have stood in the way of the professional development of young players in recent years. Now we can sniff promotion, people will not be as sympathetic to actually using our fourth choice centre-back as they might have been had we been mid-table. Hutchings may very well make an error and he may be punished for it. You could just imagine Hawley muscling him off the ball to crack in a last minute equaliser to cost us two points. It is just as possible that Downes, MacDonald, Cruise or a mystery loanee would have made the same error.

Pity that Hutchings is only on the bench - not sure how Richards will do in defence?
Hope that Briscoe plays in the middle...

Poor. Shame for Jake. I did wonder if BT Sport have it wrong and we are going 3 at the back with 3 central midfielders - 3-1-4-1- style. Greavsie after the ads. All will become clear.

Although part of me feels it is almost inevitably written that Hawley will score. Bollocks. Richards shaky in the middle of defence. Yay - Briscoe.
