After a second successive win with a performance to match, we head to Chester full of confidence and with the opening Gateshead game a distant memory. The main changes since that game have been the emergence of Ofori-Acheampong up front and Richards in the engine rooms, both forming potent partnerships with Bowman and Young respectively! The only other change from that day is the injured Briscoe who perhaps was then our best player but has since failed to shine but Ajala has continued his PSF form and along with Cameron makes up a front six that will be problematic for any team in this league! Chester were repreived from relegation last year due to the problems that Hereford suffered from and have made several changes to their squad with 10 summer signings. Foremost among them is the signing of former Wales international Gareth Roberts who spent the majority of his career in the championship with Tranmere, Doncaster and Derby. Dropped down to Bury last year but released midway between his one year contract and although Notts County snapped him straight up, also released him in the summer and now nearer to 37 than 36, perhaps his legs have started to go and may be susceptible to pace? They have also signed Chris Iwelumo from St Johnstone, a striker who has spent most of his career around league 1 level and at 6' 3" is a unit but perhaps at 36 has lost some pace which may suit us. Details of all their summer signings can be found HERE!Chester have had a couple of bad defeats at home to top of the table Barnet and Halifax losing 0-5 and 0-3 respectively but perhaps this tough start sees them in a false position? They beat yesterday's Bristol Rovers conquerors, Braintree Town 1-3 on the road, drew 2-2 at Kidderminster albeit coming back once Kidderminster went down to 10 and yesterday beat local rivals Macclesfield 1-0 with John Rooney, younger brother of the England player making the difference from a free kick! I'm sure that Hargreaves will be aiming to start with the same line up from Saturday but with a few niggles and with the tough Grimsby away game on Saturday, a few precautionary changes may have to be made...

I would imagine the Chester game is the best option of getting three points, because Grimsby have scored a shit load of goals at their place this season and will be a difficult nut to crack. If we can continue in the same vein (or is it vane?) as the last two games then anything is of course possible. Would normally have gone to this game, but had already planned a trip to the Dales, and after having spent some time painting the Mother-in-laws front door...I need a break!
So instead of getting threatening looks from the Grimsby Yoof and expecting the Grimsby Yoof to charge the away end at the end of the match (as happened last time I was there) I will be having a more leisurely Saturday, walking my three Borders Collies through the rather quaint market town of Hawes.
I have had a bit of a premonition though. If we win both the upcoming games, I believe we will go on to win the next sixteen games after that...if we don't~we won't!

link - confirmation that Cameron is out with a hamstring injury, possibly for a couple of weeks! - the fourth player we currently have with that ailment!!! So from not even making the bench, Chappell will be starting tomorrow. It's another 4 or 5 hour trip of 250 miles tomorrow which won't help matters...

Thinking about it, I wonder if Niall will be called upon with his winger talents in mind?

I guess its possible rjd but would be a surprising call from CH as niall hasn't really been involved recently. I'd be happy with Chappell stepping up. Anybody know how long Briscoe is out for?

I'm sure Chapell and Ajala will start. I think Rob was wondering about the vacancy on the subs bench - as we have run out of spare wingers. Another attacking options would be Sullivan. Ives can play on the wing so he could be on the bench if he doesn't start, or Cruise could be on the bench if Ives starts. Just one forward (Yeoman) out of five doesn't sound right though.

Now I think of it I am not so sure! Ives in front of Cruise with Ajala OR Chapell on the right might strengthen us defensively. Maybe not at Chester, but I'd be very tempted to go for that at Grimsby.

Ha, I was thinking about the subs bench but Jon makes a very good point! Out of the four wingers played so far, only Cameron is left footed with Ajala playing in his position when absent and notably cut inside when going forward on Saturday as a result.
Ives would bring more balance and is a viable alternative but suspect Hargreaves will go with his "regular wingers" initially!

linkAh, Ives was rested on Saturday after his travelling and will play in the youth FA Cup tomorrow so will not be available for his one. Slightly different report on Cameron in the Herald today who think that he may be fit but suspect that he will be exempted from 9 hours on a coach today?

At least the later kickoff means setting off at a more civilised hour. A warm morning in Torbay today though, and I personally can't think of anything worse than being cooped up on a coach for 9 hours. Let's hope the budget still allows for a coach that has air conditioning.

I don't seem to remember all these hamstring problems when D.D was around!

No but I seem to remember us having more problems when he left last time (despite PB's objections). I also seem to remember a drop in injuries and recovery times when he returned (or is that just my rose tinted recollections?) There's no doubt a physio is doubly important with the smaller squads at the lower levels...
