Although the JPT is our best chance of getting some silverware it also comes a poor second to the league and FA cup and particularly for those clubs with small squads can be seen as a distraction. However, the competition rules more or less restrict you to playing at least six of your league starting XI and with Bodin on international duty this week only gives four more options for Knill to change things if he wants to look at certain players.
So working on the basis that Cameron comes in on the left wing, wouldn't mind seeing Craig in midfield against decent opposition as reg says below just to see how he fares as he offers something different to the others. Also would be good to see Cruise in action, again to compare him to Nico and surely Benyon deserves a good run out, particularly as he is looking to open his account.
Unlike Reg, I think it is time we had a decent run in this competition and would like to see us progress if possible. Portsmouth will be a hard proposition but are now in the same division and so far haven't exactly set it alight. A home win would be great to get the show on the road for the Plainmoor faithful and to some extent will be a dry run for our league match next month. To this end I doubt if it will be a sell out but mote away fans will travel than most....

...How on earth does Bodin get to play internationally? Anyway, moving on. JPT...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. As has already been mentioned on another thread, maybe it's a good time to try Craig in the midfield for one game; has he even made the bench this season, let alone a game. If he doesn't make it to the bench in this game then I think it's best for both parties that he get's loaned out to another club, because the manager obviously doesn't rate him.
Speaking of moving on...the quicker we are out of this competition, the happier I will be!

Its just a glorified friendly these days unlike 1989 when it actually meant something, especially for a club of our size and stature. A chance perhaps to experiment and give run to those who haven't yet had a chance to show what they can do. Cruise, Lathrope Thompson, Craig, Benyon, Yeoman, Sullivan are names that come to mind all need serious match time.

I expect I will be going this evening. It's ages since we last won a cup match in the 3 major cups and it's got quite depressing in that respect. You have to hand it to Buckle for that, he had the knack of getting us exciting cup runs. I get the impression from Knill's recent interviews that he will not be changing things around much tonight. When you think about it our first 11 are still trying to get to know eachother so it makes sense not to tinker much. Perhaps a tweak here and there.

We were thinking of doing the same thing tonight i.e. Bristow Bench for one half, so may well see you there, Rob.

Predictable - cant score and out on pens, second best for most of the game so I guess the best team won. Something tells me the plan isn't quite working as we had all hoped and the expansive entertaining attacking football from the wings and two front men just isn't happening. Not worried about this tin pot competition in any case and the defenders did at least do there jobs. so there is hope. Craig not even on the bench soon to be released I reckon must be something going on behind the scenes if you ask me though I personally doubt that he would be the answer in any case. Long journey and tough test on Saturday at Fleetwood and I expect the same line up as last Saturday with the exception of Bodin, after all have any of the fringe players threatened to steal a regulars place?

0-0 full-time and Torquay lost on penalties, Mansell being the only player to miss as he ballooned the ball over. Crowd 1,900+, 300+ excellent support from Pompey, sponsors MOTM Downes. I'll be quick as I've got work early tomorrow. Torquay made a few changes starting Cruise, Lathrope, Cameron and Benyon. In the second half Sullivan replaced Chappel and made a decent impact.
A poor Torquay performance in an attacking sense. We only had 1 meaningful effort on goal - a decent Sullivan shot stung the hands of their keeper and that was after 80 odd minutes. It was a long wait for a shot from us. Harding shortly afterwards had a long distance effort just wide and that was about it from us. Our only positives were our outstanding back 4 especially Downes and Pearce and Rice in goal again had a great game - he made one fantastic tip over near the end. I thought Lathrope did a decent job of getting stuck in and winning balls like Mansell usually does. But where was our creativity tonight? We had very little to cheer about all night and it does not bode well for the season ahead. And we are only left in one meaningful cup and it's only September. Same old Torquay , I'm afraid.

Not the most entertaining of matches which only really opened up during the last quarter but one in which Portsmouth had more of and the better chances without really dominating. Knill almost agreed with the changes I mused over in the OP but preferred Lathrope to Craig in the middle.
The first half wasn't anything to write home about with Portsmouth having the best chance but a header from a dead ball was fired straight at Rice. Cruise and Cameron combined well at times to get the ball into the danger zone without creating anything clear cut. Chappell on the rare occasion received the ball into space was cynically fouled. Portsmouth nullified our threat on the wings well with at times three opponents barring the way.
Initially the second continued in the same vein as the first with the centre back pairing of Downes and Pearce looking strong with the former grabbing the headlines with some good tackles and clearances but the latter showing a cool head and good quality on the ball in some potentially dangerous situations. Of note was the substitution of Sullivan for Chappell with all three strikers taking it in turns to hang out on the wing.
The match came alive with about 15 - 20 minutes left but unfortunately with a sustained period of Pompey pressure. On one occasion Rice was rounded and Tonge cleared off the line. The best save of the match came with a reaction save from Rice after a powerful header was made on the six yard line. We did have a good period of play with around 7 minutes left and Sullivan did well to shoot from a narrow angle which was well saved and then Harding had a long range shot which went narrowly wide, one of them will fly into the net one of these days.
So onto the penalties which was down the Ellacombe End and were generally taken with aplomb, neither keeper were able to touch the ball with the difference being Manse firing his shot over. I can't really criticize the Captain who stood up to be counted but as he was substituted on with seconds to spare, would rather the manager had chosen Nico who is a better striker of the ball.
Not too gutted about exiting this competition but when will we win our first home match?

Decided to pop down for this one via picking up a Pompey supporting mate from Bath. I'm very positive about our back four and Rice and wish to see that back four start again. Pearce - the twitter MOTM - I continue to like a lot. Craig and Yeoman need to be loaned out as they are not in the Manager's thoughts, even for this competition. Chappel was quiet tonight and Cameron had one he'll want to forget. Not sure he'll get too much confidence in front of some of the audible groaning there was and his confidence looked shot. I would agree that the best side won tonight. Jon telling me we needed Mansell on at half time was what really did for us, though. A Waddlesque run up if ever there was one.
Quick out of 10's (erring on the side of generous):
Rice 7 Tonge 7 Downes 7 Pearce 8.5 Cruise 6.5 (not slow)
Chapell 5.5 Lathrope 6 Harding 6 Cameron 4 (felt for the lad a bit - shocker)
Ball 5.5 ( same promise as seen previously but not his night) Benyon 5 (but am not sure there was anything of note all night)
Subs on long enough: Sullivan 7 (first watch for me. Liked what I saw.)
G'night.

Phew, that was close...good old Manse!
If we are to do well in a competition this year, let it be the FA Cup...at least we will make money out of it!
