I think we are missing the fantastic steam railway as a central feature that very few towns in this country have. The new ticket office is exceptional. Well done everyone at P&DR except the person who stole the money that delayed the project. [/quote] Damn right, Stuart. The triple whammy of steam train ride to Kingswear, boat up the Dart from Dartmouth to Totnes and open top bus ride back to Paignton is so good we've done it twice. I'd go on to talk about the Totnes to Buckfastleigh stem line but no doubt Dave will point me in the direction of an old thread in the next few minutes which already covers the subject in detail. Meanwhile, back to the original theme of this thread and another movie/quiz question: which film featured the entirely spurious Buggleskelly Wednesday FC and what is the astronomical connection?

Or, Wildebeeste, we could have a Thursday thread to discuss Abergavenny.
Speaking of Wednesday, any Lawrie Madden memories? He was at the match on Tuesday.

Naughty boy!
Yes indeed. Lawrie was a true gentleman and I am sure the story, put about by some fool on that other site, about him giving the young Gareth Ainsworth a bunch of fives in the Saltergate tunnel is a total myth.

Lawrie is a 1970s economics and social studies graduate.
That almost makes him family, eh Wildebeeste?

Wildebeeste is unlikely to admit to anyone who made their debut for Mansfield Town being family. Economics, Social Studies, and he added a management degree to his CV when he played part-time at Wednesday from 1988 to 1991. So there's always the worrying possibility that he might be a Guardian reader Madden played over 200 games for Wednesday; worked hard and did the simple stuff, but never had the skill that most of his teammates possessed. A little later Greg Fee came into the team, and he really did look like the weak link before ending up, as Lawrie did, at Chesterfield (in Greg's case via Mansfield Town). My abiding memory of Lawrie is of a robust challenge at Villa part that sent Allan McInally spinning off the pitch. An enraged McInally making immediate tracks for Lawrie only to be immediately dispatched back in the direction he'd just came from. He's certainly had a good media career. and will have raked in a few quid since his playing days; though probably nothing compared to the salary his old teammate Brian Marwood gets at Manchester City.

Bloody hell. And Chelston Gull knows what I look like! I've changed me mind. Paignton is the jewel of the South West!! I don’t think that will work, Phil grew up in a house about five away from the one I live in now and have done for the the last twenty years or so. As you are new to the TFF you will not be aware that we once had a member now living in London who slagged of Torbay and especially the people who lived here at every opportunity. The same person who stood in front of the chairman of our club and told him how much he loved the place and would move back if he could have afforded too. We live here because we love the place, its not perfect but where is? There are good and bad people here and that is the same where ever we choose to live. I hope we do not return on here to the days when the members on the TFF ended up being divided based on where they lived. We are after all on here because we are fans of Torquay United and that is the something that should unite us. For the sake of balance Mr Wildebeeste should know that that member known as Merse was referring to the Football Club when he talked about returning (he worked at Plainmoor for many years). He never lived in Torquay or any part of the wider Torbay. He lived in Newton Abbot, a traditional market town with an industrial base and in many ways more of a football town than Torquay (or even Babbacombe!). Merse supported Torquay United from the age of about 8, was an amateur player at Plainmoor in his teens, and then was Commercial Manager for the club for about ten years. As such he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the club and football in general. He was a major contributor to the excellent History Section on TFF which attracted Wildebeeste to the site in the first place (and I am very pleased you were attracted to the site Mr Wildebeeste Guardian reader or not! ) He did have views about Torbay and often it is easier to see things clearly when you can stand back and view from afar. I love visiting London but I wouldn't want to live there. When there I always see things that I think are just not right, but those things may by-pass people who live there day in and day out. I didn't see it as separate factions and said so at the time, although having two sides to a discussion certainly aids debate and is better than keeping quiet at a family gathering for fear of upsetting your grumpy uncle. It is a natural phenemonon that things come in twos: conservatives and labour; scouts and guides; democrats and republicans; girls and boys; primary and secondary; management and staff; jekyll and hyde; rosemary and thyme; bacon and eggs; birds and bees; Cagney and Lacey. The list is endless! On Sunday we will pause to remember those who gave their lives in service of this Country and ourselves. It is only by trying to understand people who have differing and opposing views to oneself that we will ever achieve lasting peace.

Many a wise word from Stefano there. And for Alpine Joe, as a reward for reminding me that Lawrie Madden once played for Mansfield Town:

Stefano's right to put the other side of the story. Whilst I wouldn't say that Merse was blameless, the reaction his posts and comments used to inspire was pathetic and said more about them than it did Merse imo. Having said that, he knew exactly which buttons to press! ;D

That's a very fair-minded statement from Stefano.
If you read Alan Merson's message board you'll know that I contribute to it as much as TFF. That's been the case ever since Alan set up his site. What surprises me is that he established it exactly two years ago. That's time for a lot of water to pass under the bridge on both sides.
I understand the issues and have no wish to open up old wounds. But I'll just say that Alan was a regular - and often excellent - contributor to this site when it was probably at its' very best. That's not to invite anyone to turn back the clock. But his contribution to this site - and Torquay United - shouldn't be forgotten.

Im not in a positon right now to reply on this thread but will do when I get home. There is a post made by Nick two years ago I will find it as it wss a very fair minded post about the situation two years ago. For the record for now I will just say I have always had a great deal of respect for all the wonderful knowledge merse has and have always been saddened we could not find that better way forward

For the record for now I will just say I have always had a great deal of respect for all the wonderful knowledge merse has and have always been saddened we could not find that better way forward I would have thought that the sensible balanced post made by Nick two hours ago about there having been plenty of water under the bridge in the last two years and not wishing to open up old wounds, more than adequately sums up the present situation, and it would be best not to seek out posts from two years ago. I and most others had just about forgotten about it Dave until your unprovoked personal attack yesterday on a former valued member of the TFF (have a glance through the Poster of the Week section) knowing that he could not come on here himself to say anything in his defence. What was done was done and nobody is now looking for a way back, not least Merse.

You can judge when I have written my post. Actually I am not too sure what you have just said let alone what you are going to say. Whatever you plan to say is though immaterial to the point I, and Barton Downs made, that this is all two years ago and should be allowed to fade into history. Am looking forward to reading some positive Torquay United related content on here over the weekend as our club seek to turn around our recent misfortune with a hatful of goals.
