The programme for a rather historic, if not confusing date-wise, game…
This is for the home match against Brighton in the wartime Third Division South league played on the 27th of April 1946, which resulted in a 0-0 draw; a game that should’ve been played before Christmas.
This was the 1945/46 wartime season which was split into two competitions, with this game confusingly from the pre-Christmas league but played after the end of the post-Christmas cup competition. The league competition, pre-Christmas, was for the Third Division South; whilst the post-Christmas competition was for the Third Division South Cup, with qualification through a league competition where upon the first and second places qualified for the semi-finals of the cup.
As can be seen from the fixture list within this programme, this is the last competitive game of the season, but is actually a ‘left-over’ from the previous pre-Christmas league competition. Note that both Brighton games in the post-Christmas competition have already been played, as have all the other matches in this Third Division South Cup.
Presumably, for some reason, this game was postponed from its’ original date from the first half of the season, and with a new time being unavailable was tagged onto the season’s end. This means that the first period league tables couldn’t be finalised at the end of that competition in December, but had to wait until after the second period’s cup competition league fixtures had come to an end.
Therefore this must be the last competitive game played by Torquay before normal league action resumed, as Phil Joslin’s benefit game against Fulham was a friendly.
For another programme from the latter cup competition in this season, the home game against Swindon, see: www.torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=2050&action=display&thread=5935
