Not too much excitement at Barnsley last night but an absorbing enough game nevertheless. 2-0 to Peterborough – thanks to two early goals – who looked a far better team than the league table has been suggesting. Mr Olejnik was largely untroubled and, in his own imperious way, took his time with his kicks and chores as the clock ran down. He always strikes me as a man who enjoys defending a lead away from home.
£23 to watch last night's game. Barnsley apparently have a sliding scale: it was £26 on Saturday; £28 for the forthcoming Forest game. I was early through the turnstile and the bloke on the gate treid to charge me £26. Then he gave me the wrong change. He blamed rustiness. We both thought it funny - as did his colleague on the next gate - and I told them it was far more enjoyable than putting your ticket into an electronic reader. Then, once inside, a steward said "Good evening" from over my shoulder and expressed absloutely no interest in searching my bag. I liked that as an entry to the ground.
In the car afterwards I was told it's £36 to watch Barnsley at Leeds on Saturday. Then I looked in the programme and saw it's a fiver at Charlton on 20 October. Well, what do you know?
Meanwhile Oakwell - and its surrounds - remains as photogenic as ever even though the scene has changed greatly since my first visit in December 1974.
But not, of course, that old stand:
