After watching the Chesterfield championship winning side of two years ago, I was a little surprised to see them come straight back down but we know to our own cost how difficult it is to get established in league 1 and a high proportion of recently promoted sides do seem to end up relegated with a year or two. We did take advantage of their struggles last year to record a good 3-1 win on their ground in the FA Cup. Prior to that, the last game together in the league was at Plainmoor where the point from a 0-0 draw was enough to put us in the play offs although we weren't to know it at the time..... We are neck and neck in the league at the moment with only goals scored separating us and both sides only losing one game(to Wimbledon in their case!) and pointing to too many draws to see us "languishing" in mid table. Chesterfield did sack their manager due to their slow start which from an outsider's view was a little harsh as he knows how to get out of this division but maybe some members on here will put me right. Since Sheridan's exit, Chesterfield have won both their home games scoring 7 goals in the process. Jack Lester is once again top of the goal scoring charts and although must be getting on a bit now, (Edit: will be 37 next month) will still be a player to watch. Looking at their line up last time out I see Danny Whitaker was only a sub which again is surprising considering his impact last time they were in this league? Ex Chesterfield players Ian Morris (season long loan I think) and Aaron Downes will almost certainly start and no doubt will be looking to get one over their old club. The best news for me this week is that Nathan Craig is expected to be fit for this one although with it being a tough away game will probably remain on the left wing with maybe Macklin and Thompson held back to make an impact later on. The midfield will have to be on top form to relieve the pressure that the defence has had to cope with recently if we are to bring any points home with us. This completes a sequence of four away games out of six during September, a month that has been disappointing in recent years.

Torquay have never, ever won a league game in Derbyshire. That's gone and done it now. That is probably why looking at another Torquay forum those that have commented on the game can only see a home win. Thinking about it over the years I have never expected to get anything away to Chesterfield, and although I have never checked the head to head stats if we have never won there then that is why. Strangely though I have a good feeling about this one. With the players we have we can not continue to be rubbish for too long. The talent shown only momentarily this season against Cheltenham and Rochdale is about to shine through consistently with everything clicking into place right across the park. If that happens on Saturday we could be treated to a 3-0 away win. More realistically though I feel it will be a hard fought 1-1 draw, or if somebody can remind our players that a football game lasts for 90 minutes, even a 1-0 win!

Do we have a 100% win record in Derbyshire in the FA Cup?

Indeed Saltergate was a bit of a graveyard for Torquay. I wonder if anyone of you were stood on the away terrace up there in our promotion season 90/1. I can remember the fog coming down and just managing to make out Dean Edwards poking home a very late equalizer at the other end for a 1 1 draw. Que lots of jumping around on open terracing, happy days !

Thanks Rob for yet another excellent post to get our match day thread started. Records are always there to be beaten and it does not matter if we have never ever won a league game in Derbyshire, there has to be a first time and why not tomorrow? Only one team has beaten us so far this season and that has to tell us one thing, we are very good at defending, or do I believe we have just been lucky? No I do not believe that for one second and the only concern I might have, is do we have the goals in us to go and win the tree points. I would expect Martin Ling to stick with one up front away from home, reading recent reports on here it does seem we need to find a way to get control of the midfield, do we have the players to do that? I happen to think we will sneak a win as so often in games like this, we seem to play our best and I do believe on our day, we are good enough to beat anyone. If you are going to the game by car you might find the following information useful. Address:Chesterfield Football Club, The Proact Stadium, 1866 Sheffield Road, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield Sat Nav Information: S41 8NZ (Older sat navs please use S41 8LF) Contact Details Phone Number: 01246 209765 CFC Fax No: 01246 556799 Email:reception@chesterfield-fc.co.uk If you are going by car, the club asks you to avoid parking on the following residential streets. Lockford Lane, James Street, Holme Road, William Street, Sanforth Street, Nelson Street, Grove Road, Pottery Lane (residential section), King Street North, Shaw Street, Park Lane, Ormsby Road, Ludham Close and Ludham Gardens, Greenside Avenue, Glenfield Crescent, Thorndene Close.

You'll be stuck at the side to extract a couple of extra quid from you and to avoid opening the entire north stand. This annoys me as a home fan as I have to walk further to the post-beer conveniences.

Drove past the new ground last year. Looks good. Rubbish name, though - either of them. What I don't understand is why more new grounds don't come with an alternative sponsor-free name

The good news for Torquay is that Chesterfield goalkeeper and local hero Tommy Lee is injured, and it was when Tommy was crocked last season that the Spireites plunged down to the bottom of the table. Big close-season signing Marc Richards is also missing with injury.
The bad news for the Gulls is that the sacking of John Sheridan has given the Spireites' squad a big lift. Sheridan was a very grumpy boss, given to savaging his players publicly on the wireless and in the papers, but his former nos 2 and 3 Tommy Wright and Mark Crossley seem to be a much more genial pair who are, I'm sure, much less scary to work for.
Men to watch include my favourite, Drew Talbot, who is only 26 but looks ten years older and so probably takes defenders by surprise as he bursts down the wing, and Jack Lester, who is 36 but looks ten years younger. Jack is treated like a demi-god by the Spireites' faithful which is only fair because he has bags of tricks and skill. He does, however, have the odd day on which he decides to spend his time diving for free kicks, arguing with opponents and generally wasting space, so Torquay might get lucky tomorrow depending on his mood.
Possible weak links are raw young goalie Richard O'Donnell and skipper Neal Trotman, who is a popular, experienced and whole-hearted defender but lives up to the Trot part of his name by moving like a carthorse. He will find Rene Howe a difficult man to handle but then again if Torquay are playing 4-5-1 and not giving the big lad much support it will make his day much easier.
Any Torquay fans arriving by train could take the canal walk to the ground, which cuts down the time but might also involve a risk of drowning following the recent downpours. Otherwise just follow signs to Sheffield and you can't go wrong because the stadium is on Sheffield Road.
For a pre-match pint, the Derby Tup is the best venue because it is, decisively, the number 1 pub in town. It does get very full on a matchday though so you might end up standing on the pavement outside. And if you want chips or sweets (I'm thinking of petef in particular here) you will be spoilt for choice.
My advice is to arrive early and sample the delights of the cobbled open market and the coffee shops which make Chesterfield so reminiscent of Paris, before donning wellies and strolling along the canal, keeping an eye out for kingfishers and water voles. Then a swift one at the Tup, a bag of chips and a Curly Wurly before settling down to enjoy what has to be the top match of the day.

Chris you must be looking forward to this one. I just hope our lot turn up this week and make it an entertaining spectacle, our last two home performances have been less than convincing and we are fast earning a reputation as a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team amongst our lot. I predict a draw but who knows? Will it be it be the delightful Dr Jekyll we all witnessed against Rochdale or the evil and grossly unattractive Mr Hyde we saw last week? Toss a coin !

Being pedantic I'd suggest that, though good, the Derby Tup is the third best pub in Chesterfield. My fellow real ale lovers and I have ranked the Chesterfield Arms #1, The Tramway #2 and the Tup #3. Depending who's on the bar I often prefer the atmosphere and beers at the Real Ale shop (pub without toilet!) further down Whitt Moor.
