Although Rotherham United can trace its Football League history, via Rotherham County, back to 1919 there was an earlier professional club called Rotherham Town. Town had three seasons in the Football League between 1893 and 1896. The Paul and Shirley Smith book gives information about their ground at Clifton Grove: I went to have a look before yesterday’s game. Bugger all to see because the ground was built upon long ago. By my reckoning it was behind the shops on the right hand side of the road in the second picture. And again behind the houses to the right in the third photograph. Not a bad part of town adjoining Clifton Park, Rotherham’s main and finest park. It even has one of those road train thingies you see trundling around Torquay. Rather a surprise in Rotherham but I resisted the temptation of a picture. Mind you, the park could have done with a balloon:
