Once-upon-a-time - in the days when they were simply known as "The Wednesday" - the club that is now Sheffield Wednesday played at a ground called Olive Grove. According to the Paul and Shirley Smith grounds book, Wednesday played over a hundred Football League games at Olive Grove between 1892 and 1899. The record crowd was 28,000 for a FA Cup game against Everton: Hillsborough, out to the north-west of the city, was a fair move from Olive Grove which was actually to the south of the city centre. Indeed it was the proverbial stone's throw from Bramall Lane which also first saw Football League action in September 1892. Should you travel to Sheffield from the south, Olive Grove would be on your right just as the train starts to slow. Nowadays it's a city council depot and if you study one of these pictures carefully you can see the red-and-white metal of Bramall Lane looming in the middle-distance.
