No Eric Webber in that Southampton side, I see. He played plenty of times for the Saints either side of the war and, at the time of this game, would have been about a year short of joining Torquay as player-manager.
The one name in the Southampton team that rings bells with me is Charlie Wayman: 73 goals in a hundred league games for Southampton; 105 in 157 for Preston.
And what of the advert for Dickinson's sports shops on Torwood Street and Belgrave Road. Was that the predecessor shop of the one that Mike Sangster eventually took over on Torwood Street? I'm sure I remember it.
Indeed was that Ted Dickinson, a name at the back of my memory that I always associate with Torquay cricket? According to Cricinfo, Ted Dickinson played a couple of games for Leicestershire in the 1930s and he's also credited with setting those big-name Torquay cricket festivals of the 1950s we've previously discussed. I'm pretty sure too that I read on this forum, or possibly another one, that Ted Dickinson was also a Derby County footballer.

I saw Charlie Wayman play at Plainmoor for Middlesborough in on e of our floodlit friendlys, probably 1955. He was prolific goal scorer. Incredibly for a centre forward only 5ft 5in. Other players I remember from that Middlesboroughgame was the two foreign players they fielded that night. Roland Ugolini was in goal and Lindy Delapina was on the left wing. Two foreigners in one team, how unusual!

Thanks for showing the programme for the Middlesborough game, Jon And Timbo. I notice Roland Ugolini was not named,in the team but I distinctly rememember him playing. I was standing behind the goal at the Babbacombe end. Incidentally,I see Dougie Knapman was scheduled to play on the wing for us. He was a starlet for,Hele Spurs and was expected to make the grade in league football. Indeed he was expected to follow,in the illustrious footsteps of former Hele Spurs players Graham Bond and the Northcott brothers. Not to forget Ernie Pym who had turned out for St marychurch Spurs who played on the hill otherwise known as King George V playing fields. Another connection of United and local clubs was Billy Thomas who sadly passed away. Welshman Thomas who when released by United played for Chelston in the Exeter and District league.

Incidentally,I see Dougie Knapman was scheduled to play on the wing for us. I hadn't noticed that. Ted Calland actually played left wing (and scored our goal) - the only change from the programme for TUFC. Alan Bastow came on as a sub for Don Mills.
