I know I have lived at times a hard and very stressful life, but I’m not 58 years old yet and do I really look like some old age pensioner? Once again when at the gate of Galmptons ground when I went to pay my entrance fee, I was asked that very question. One of these fine days I’m going to not worry if someone thinks I look past my sell by date and start getting in places at the OAP rates lol.
I have been using an app on my phone to try and lose some weight, (yes I know I’m short and fat) and I was considering recently, if I should become a local ref on Saturday afternoons. Well after all today’s ref had to put up with, I don’t think I need to endure such abuse on a Saturday afternoon and will just stick to running up the stairs and watching local matches from the sidelines. I can’t remember the last time I was at any football match where there was so much moaning going on from both sets of players.
For Teignmouth up front was a local player known to many of us and in most local games, there is always one player who stands out as he has that extra bit of class on the ball, that makes him stick out more than most of the other players on the pitch. Carl Cliff- Brown was that player and it did not take him too long to get his name on the score sheet.
In the early exchanges of the game there was very little between the two teams, but Galmpton were at times the own worst enemy at the back and the reason they ended up always having to chance the game to try and not let Teignmouth run away with it.
A Galmpton player knowing he was not going to get his head on the ball hooked it out of the air to concede a needless free kick. The ball was swung to the back post and knocked back across the goal where Carl Cliff- brown was standing and all he had to do was tap the ball into the net.
Galmpton at times were passing the ball well enough but most moves broke down before they got to close to the Teignmouth box and during the whole of the first half, only forced the Teignmouth keeper into making one serious save.
Teignmouth added to their score after a dreadful mistake was made by the Galmpton right back. He was on the ball in plenty of space and was looking for movement ahead of him. He seemed to be caught in two minds what to do with the ball, then turned and under hit a back pass to his keeper. It was a race who was going to get to the ball first, the Galmpton keeper or the Teignmouth forward. They both got to the ball at the same time, but it looked like the keeper missed the ball and kicked the Teignmouth forward. Shouts for a penalty rang around the ground, but the forward found himself past the keeper with the ball at his feet and he rolled it to Carl Cliff- Brown who tapped the ball into the empty net.
Carl Cliff- Brown maybe should have scored goal number three for Teignmouth but his attempted lob of the Galmpton keeper just went over the top of the crossbar. Just as the ref was about to blow for halftime, Galmpton had their best chance to pull a go back, their number 14 hit a fine shot from the edge of the box that had the keeper beaten, but the ball skinned the top of the crossbar and over for a goal kick.
On to the second half and Galmpton worked hard to get back in the match and were awarded a penalty for a trip in the box. Their number seven drilled the ball low and hard to the keepers left and it looked like game on and a possible fight back by Galmpton.
Sadly for Galmpton they soon found themselves two goals behind again after a clever ball put Teignmouth's number eight on a one on one with the Galmpton keeper. The keeper came out low and was able to block the ball, but it broke free to Teignmouth’s number eleven who blasted the ball into the empty net.
Galmpton went looking for another goal and it soon came after a good shot by their number fourteen who hit a sweet shot from the just out side the right hand side of the area
Poor old Carl Cliff- Brown soon afterwards found himself getting what I felt was unnecessary stick of a number of the Galmpton players. A Galmpton player went down injured on the halfway line and there were shouts to put the ball out of play. But they instead when and mounted an attack of the Teignmouth goal. It came to nothing and the ball ended up at the feet of a Galmpton player, near the halfway line again where the player was still lying down injured. He had the chance to put the ball out of play, but strangely only kicked the ball a few yards away from himself. Everyone one was standing still except Carl Cliff – Brown who then ran with the ball into the empty half of the pitch. He got near the Galmpton area and squared the ball to a team mate whose shot just went past the post.
Teignmouth rapped the game up with a forth goal after some great work out wide by their right winger. He beat two men and sent in a good cross to his team mate number fourteen who buried the ball into the net.
All in all a good and enjoyable game to watch with plenty of goals into the bargain. In the programme I noticed that Galmpton had a player called Kenin Wills. Is this the same player who played for us in the Leroy promotion season?
