i think the match itself has been covered pretty much from all above,it will long live in the memory for its pure entertainment value alone but had much more than that. What a debut from young niall thompson,a few more performances like that and the cheque books will be out for sure,he showed maturity way beyond his years, handling the occasion very well. We showed a physical side today, which has been all but missing of late, and rochdale couldnt handle it. 45 points too safety for now,but fingers crossed for more, and on this performance it should well be

[quote author=swangull board=matchday thread=9762 post=94833 time=1345918791 but there were also woeful performances from substitutes Cuise and Jarvis. Perhaps you can forgive Cruise playing out of position at right back after Downes was sent off but Jarvis was shocking and offered nothing. Atieno would have done a lot more and it worries me that Jarvis is our only alternative to Howe. [/quote] I thought Cruise could (if required) cover at CB so it would have made sense that he cover Downes departure. If McKenzie isn't going to come on at that stage he never will - back up CB required ASAP, oh for the people's Champion It does worry me that Jarvis is our back up striker and possible game changer - Thompson had a cracking league debut today and offers so much more. Torquay first IX would gain promotion without a doubt but with injuries and suspensions the quality on the bench ain't there I'm afraid. Agree I'd prefer Atieno as back up striker. Critical turning point was the Poke penalty save. Had that gone in you sensed that Rochdale would have gained a point or possibly won the game.

Interesting thoughts on Jarvis. The feeling is starting to creep towards that of fans of other clubs I've seen - even Orient fans seem unimpressed, despite the fact that Ling says he did well there some old boy sat behind me in bristows bench was discussing a rumour that elliot benyon maybe coming back on loan? no idea if any truth in that but would help a lot if he did I'd rather pay him to stay away

Jeez, what it is with football fans who can't look beyond getting old players back? 9 times out of 10 it never works out; 9.99 times out of 10 the rumour never comes to anything in the first place, yet I guarantee you that the first hint of a midfield crisis this season and some doofer will be asking why we don't sign Alex Russell again...

I thought Jarvis had a shocker yesterday, worse I have seen him play. At the moment if Rene is out, I would move Bodin in his position with Macklin, Danny and Thompson covering the wings. It would make for a very fast and young attack. As for the defence, McKenzie looked good in pre-season and maybe should be given his chance as Thompson had his? I know Ling didn't put him on as a sub yesterday but feel he is trying to give Cruise as much pitch time as possible to hasten his development as he can see a good player in there.

Hmmmm. About the only time he's looked useful was on his loan spell at Orient. When he went there permanently his record was pretty poor for a forward. Same at Walsall so perhaps inconsistency is to be expected?
Mind you, he was rather isolated given we were down to 10 by then so he didnt have much in the way of support with Bodin and Thompson having already gone off ?

Bet people are glad we didn't sign MacDonald again. What is it, 11 conceded in 2 games for AFC Wimbledon? Apparently he wasn't doing great in the first game either until he created their equaliser

No problem with Benyon coming back - can't see what the fuss would be about.

Mind you, he was rather isolated given we were down to 10 by then so he didnt have much in the way of support with Bodin and Thompson having already gone off ? It is fair to say that he was awful when he came-on, but I agree that he hardly had much in the way of an outlet without Bodin, Howe or Thompson. The dismissal of Downes changed the whole dynamic of the match. if Jarvis had come-on for Howe and he still had Thompson on then he wouldn't have been forced to play so deep, he would have more attacking support and wouldn't have had to have chased the ball so much. Morris was playing OK before the sending-off, then he turned back into the player that we saw last season - poor decision making, execution and his knack for finding anyone on the pitch not wearing yellow was back but given the circumstances it was perhaps to have been expected. The shape of the match changed so much on that single decision (which I'm not disputing was correct) and a game that was surely won was thrown back into a very slight doubt and understandably the players were jittery. I don't see that it is time to bring-in another striker to the club and would be astonished if we did that Benyon (a striker that has not scored more than 4 or 5 goals since he left?) came back here - and if he did would he fit-into our standard pitch set-up?!

That was a brilliant game to watch. Many positives there, but the most encouraging was the performance of Niall Thompson.
I had said I thought he should have replaced Macklin on Tuesday and was very pleased that he got the nod for Rochdale.
Would he wilt under the pressure or rise to the occasion? The latter with bells on.
He absolutely loved it out there - not a glimmer of fear or self-doubt. He played with a smile on his face. I'm not saying he will be another Lee Sharpe, but the confident self-assured way he went about things did remind me of how Sharpe took to first team football.
Last season, anyone could see that Thompson had pace and skill in spades, but those qualities don't guarantee a future in the game. In pre-season, he showed the kind of strength and determination that raised hopes. He has now raised them higher.
Thompson, Howe and Bodin was a threesome that Rochdale just could not handle. I don't think many League 2 defences could.

It seems a bit daft to pick negatives after such a stunning performance, but I've never shied away from being daft. Rene's booking was totally unnecessary. Why do it? If he ends up picking up a ban because of that, it will be very annoying. He then did his best to get himself sent off. Why? Two goals, 4-1 up. Just enjoy it! Why did Downes bring his man down? I know it is the only foot he has put wrong since arriving, so it it harsh to criticise. The striker was running across goal so probably had a one in ten chance of scoring. To gift the opposition a penalty significantly increased their chances of scoring. Not to mention the almost inevitable red card. Why do it? Or was it not a conscious decision to take him down? I expected Cruise to slot straight in at left centre back. When he signed, we were told it was his best position. Indeed Rowe-Turner was released precisely because he did not offer cover for that position. (I had thought he did until that reserve team 9 goal drubbing at Cheltenham - although his partner in crime that day seemed to recover from it). Instead, Saah shifted from right to left centre, Oastler from right back to right centre back and Cruise played at right back - where he did not look at all comfortable. What was all that about? If Downes only has a one match ban, I thought Cruise (or possibly McKenzie) could slot straight in. The messy substitution makes me think we need to bring in a loanee. On the subject of substitutions, we managed to take off all of our attacking threat leaving Rochdale free rein to play a lot further up the field. It was obvious that a forward would be sacrificed when we went to ten men. Howe had already been booked and rarely plays 90 minutes anyway. I would have taken him off for Cruise and played 4-3-2 with Thompson and Bodin stretching them at the back. Thompson was sacrificed which was no great surprise, but Morris switched wide left and Bodin wide right making us a 4-4-1 Then Howe was taken off before he got sent off and replaced with Jarvis. We then took Bodin off, presumably "saving him" for future battles, and brought on Craig wide left with Morris switching to wide right. That left us with absolutely no pace going forward whatsoever and zero scoring threat. I would have been happier seeing Yeoman given a run to at least try to give their defenders something to think about. Apart from that, it was a fantastic performance!
