Bank holiday weekend in August and Rochdale on their return to this division have hit the fixture jackpot and hopefully will bring a good away following. Their manager John Coleman is no stranger to us and performed well at Accrington on a limited budget but was unable to avoid the drop with Rochdale. However, he has had the chance to put his own mark on the team bringing in eleven players for the new season with six having their league debut against Northampton a week ago. Like us, they have had a tough start, drawing their first two games. Coleman seems to have brought in a mixture of youngsters from nearby higher league clubs, a couple of established strikers in George Donnelly from Macclesfieldand Dele Adebola from Hull and like every good manager raided his old club with Craney and Putterill in on non contract terms and that "left back thug" Kevin McIntyre. Funny enough, Peter Cavangh, one of the midfielders described by Wildebeest was brought in from Fleetwood. Of course in addition to these new players, Coleman has the remnants of the league 1 side from last year with Andrew Tutte and Jason Kennedy pulling the strings in midfield and not forgetting the highly rated Ashley Grimes who did well for Lincoln and even now is being targeted by our old friends Crawley. It seems a bit early on in the season to be having an injury crisis but those two casualties from Tuesday leave us a bit short with every fit player just able to fill the bench. Easton should cover Lathrope's position fairly easily but the 4-3-3 formation does need to have quickish wingers able to bomb forward to support Rene and Ling needs to weigh up his options carefully. If Danny isn't back in time, does he give a first league start to Thompson? Does he play safe and put Cruise in there? Does he put Morris on the wing and put Nathan Craig in the Eunan role or even put Craig on the left wing? Alternatively, Jarvis could play on the right wing. Whatever, option is chosen there will be an element of risk which may or may not work out. With this being our second home game this week, the onus will need to be getting our first win on the board but it won't be easy against a team looking to bounce straight back up. I forecast a tight game with the surprise 5-0 win when we last met at Plainmoor unlikely to be repeated! ;D

I would be in favour of giving Thompson a go tomorrow, he has pace to burn and that alone is often enough to unsettle defences. He has done ok in pre season and dare I say potentially offers more of a threat than Jarvis or Morris on recent performances....

if thompsons football skills end up as good as his pace he could be a big star in the making,he already looks good enough "In the making" loyal as you so rightly say. We shouldn't expect the finished article and he will no doubt have to cope with the usual touchline barracking when he makes a mistake or misplaces a pass. No doubt the usual suspects that gave Danny Stevens and Ian Morris such a hard time will once again be heard and the big question will be whether he will cope with the pressure and the step up. No doubt he has plenty of ability and recognised by the manager and coaches the worst thing we could do is throw him in the deep end and watch him drown when to much is expected to quickly. Having said that the manager has to find out what he's made of at some point which is fine as long as we all do our job and encourage the lad. Stepping up will also be a test when he's up against hardened cynical defenders. Any thugs in the Rochdale line up? I imagine Lingy will have him on the bench and start with the seasoned pros to soften them up but cant see him moving Morris out wide again in a hurry reckon it will be Jarvis who gets the nod this time, he works hard for the team and has a bit of know how which will be crucial in what will be another testing encounter.

[Stepping up will also be a test when he's up against hardened cynical defenders. Any thugs in the Rochdale line up? . They also have a cynical side so be prepared to see your more skilful and direct players clogged, especially by left back Kevin McIntyre, whose thuggery eventually subdued the Spireites' Drew Talbot. Noises coming out of the club is that Thompson will start!

A good win, by the sounds. But chickens coming home to roost from not getting the extra centre back now that Downes will be suspended

Downes will be missed - I thought the player he bought down was moving away from goal anyway.
He also needs to get in another striker/winger to replace Thompson will obviously replace Macklin.
Nothing on the bench today to change a game.

But chickens coming home to roost from not getting the extra centre back now that Downes will be suspended I thought that Downes would have an automatic three match suspension initially but talking to Jon after the match and thinking back to last season, didn't Saah get a red against Gillingham away but just got the one match ban as it was not for violent conduct..... Superb match that put the Cheltenham match in the shade and the home crowd has been treated to an excellent style of attacking football. On the wing, Danny will be back next week and Bodin, Thompson, Danny and Macklin can all do a job out there this season!

What a quality game of football that was. At the final whistle the score could quite easily 8to 5 or any number you can think of there were so many chances for both sides come the end and after Donwns had been harshly dismissed. We should have been way out of sight before our third which more or less sealed it as Bodin, Howe and a calm and impressive debutant, Niall Thompson carved the Rochdale defence to shreads. Havent enjoyed ninety minutes of live fooball like that for quite a while but believe me it was only an exceptional hard working display particularly in the middle of the park that won us this one. After dominating the opening exchages Dale scored a cracker from a well worked corner and I wondered how we would react and feared the worst for all of 5 minutes when we looked dangerous with every forward move, Classy Billy Bodin scored again from close range which set on the way to dominating much of the first half though Rochdale who passed the ball around superbly at times always posed a threat and were prepared to shoot at every opportunity. When Downes scored a deserved second to take us into a half time lead we all knew that we would probably have to score again in the second half to ensure victory as the game was so open. Sure enough some incredible chances were made and missed and yuo started to wonder if Dale woul dmake us pay the price but then a superb double ten minute strike from Rene Howe sealed a hard earned victory despite all that went on after with the disputed pen and sending of Downes. Sure we were hanging on a bit at the end with the introduction of Nathan Craig, Tom Cruise and Ryan Jarvis but the hard work had been done for a well deserved and very entertaining viictory. Happy days

A valuable 3 points against one of the supposed favourites for a top 7 finish. Dale started the better for about the first 15 with another set piece goal conceded, but after that we clicked into gear and looked the better side. Bodin slotted in the first and Downes the second to leave a Rochdale side pretty much chasing shadows. They did not look at all like a promotion side and were poor compared to Cheltenham on Tuesday. The second half started the way the first half finished with us comfortably in charge and it was no suprise when Howe drilled in the third and followed it up with a trademark fourth, shrugging off defenders and calmly selling the keeper and chipping over him. I think we had hit the woodwork another couple of times as well by then. Howe really does need to start thinking a bit more though as he could quite easily have got a second yellow after the stupid head to head confrontation for the first. Thats probably why Lingy elected to replace him as he was behaving very petulantly. Downes was red carded for what looked (to me) like a slip (there were plenty of players slipping over all game thanks no doubt to the persistent rain) and he caught the Dale player as he fell over. Good call by Poke (and Manse) who went the right way and palmed it strongly. He then pulled off some excellent stops to stop Dale getting back into the match while the clock ran down. Dale did start to impose themselves on the match with the extra man but we held out long enough to put the game beyond Dale even when they pulled one back. MoM should have been Pokey IMO but sponsors gave it to Thompson. Worthy of mention is the Saah/Downes partnership which looks particularly good, Easton filled the Lathrope role and quietly went about it with no fuss. We looked good with 11 men and Dale had no answer till we went down to 10. Vale will be a much harder test than a, to be honest, lacklustre Rochdale side we made look very run of the mill.

This was an absolute cracking game of football, that had everything with 6 goals, a penalty save, a sending off, hitting the crossbar twice, an excellent debut from Thompson, both keepers making some cracking saves and of course that all important three points. I must admit, I was quite fearful of the result today after the first ten minutes. Although Mansell had a shot well saved in the first few minutes, Rochdale were able to play the ball through the middle for a shooting chance that was fortunately screwed wide. However, from their first corner, the ball was hit on the ground to the edge of the area where the Rochdale player with too much space was able to hit the ball low into the corner of the net. Like the Cheltenham game, it was too easy and almost felt like a training ground move! However, as with the Cheltenham game, we were able to crank the play up over the next hour to the stage where Rochdale were all at sea and it was only the sending off which made this game closer than it had to be. Bodin was the catalyst, scoring the first goal from close range and a fairly tight angle. Rochdale almost re-established their lead directly from the restart with a great strike from the right hand side of the area hit across Poke and cannoning off the cross bar. However, at the other end we were starting to take control of the match and after a number of corners we finally scored from one with a well worked header from Downes at the far post going in off the defender on the line. What a signing he is proving to be! We had a great chance to further extend our lead with a great ball in to Howe from Thompson to create an one on one but like Bodin at Cheltenham, their keeper was able to dive on the ball as he tried to round him! I thought we scored again just before half time when after an initial save, the ball came out to Manse whose shot was just tipped over the bar with an acrobatic save. So 2-1 at half time but this match had similar shades to Cheltenham and was so open you just knew that we had to score again. However, the omens were good with our front three playing well with Thompson looking at home on the wing, asking those questions and enjoying every minute of it! The midfield were in combative mood, always looking to close the opposition down with Mansell leading the line constantly scampering after the ball in his terrier like fashion! ;D A proper box to box player! As on Tuesday, the team came out flying in what was their best spell of the match and the action was so constant and frenetic that it was hard to remember and describe all the action. There was a great treble chance when Thompson was fouled but came out with the ball and with the ref wisely playing advantage was able to get into the area and shoot, although well saved it went straight to Billy who maybe should have scored but the shot was blocked (or did he hit the cross bar or was that another time?) and then came to Rene who back heeled it just the wrong side of the post. The ball came out to Thompson on the left who cut inside and his curling shot was just tipped wide of the post. I think it was from this corner that again Downes got on the end of but it was blocked on the line with the home crowd unsuccessfully appealing for handball. However from another corner, the pressure eventually told and when the ball came to Howe in the area he made no mistake to slot the ball home inside the right post, it was no less than what we deserved! With Rochdale having to commit men forward more, Big Rene was able to score in that classic style of his. A clearance just bounced over their midfielder and Rene was able to run onto it, hold off their last defender and with the keeper forced to come out, apply that deft touch to lob him with the ball just going inside the left hand post. With just over twenty minutes to go, you would have thought game over! However, there were two instances that gave Rochdale a glimmer of hope. The first was from a Rochdale through ball which put their striker clear and Downes covering, made contact and although they were running slightly away from goal, it was a clear penalty (well as clear as I could be sitting in the family stand! and being the last man, an automatic red card. From the resulting penalty kick, Poke guessed the right way and diving to his left was able to touch the ball wide of his post. Thompson was sacrificed for Cruise to shore up the defence. The second instance was when Rene after having a bit of late desserts from the Rochdale defender, confronted him, eyeball to eyeball which was broken up by the ref who had no choice to dish out a couple of yellows. more professionalism please Rene, just smile remind him of the score and walk off. When the Rochdale defender went down like a sack of spuds after clearing the ball and receiving the lightest of touches if at all from Rene, Ling had no choice but to take him off and unfortunately, Jarvis had a poor game and our goal threat went. So the game turned abruptly on its head and after coasting to victory, it got a bit like Tuesday night or the siege of the Alamo. Once again Poke made some great saves (another good game under his belt) and there were one or two goal line clearance. Just when I thought we had weathered the storm, one of their attacks got through and they scored from a shot inside the area. The problem we had was from a lack of ball retention and although Nathan Craig came on for Bodin, the attacks were relentless. Morris had a good chance to shoot on the edge of the area but tried to fashion a better position and the opportunity was lost! Somehow, five minutes of injury were found, despite a lack of injuries but the team stood firm for that all important, confidence boosting victory. Once again, what a cracking game, we won't get too many as good and a great advertisement for our level of football. Just need to improve the defence slightly, mainly from set pieces but without taking anything away from the Saah-Downes lynch-pin partnership at the back!

After Tuesday's high excitement and high drama, I was expecting more of a normal game today. No chance of that, today's game surpassed that one by a long way - it was a remarkable game! Torquay deserved their win thanks to their breathtaking attacking today but there were also big worrying signs defending and the score should have been something more like 7-6! There were some outstanding performances from Poke, Downes, Bodin, Howe and sponsors MOTM debutant Thompson but there were also woeful performances from substitutes Cuise and Jarvis. Perhaps you can forgive Cruise playing out of position at right back after Downes was sent off but Jarvis was shocking and offered nothing. Atieno would have done a lot more and it worries me that Jarvis is our only alternative to Howe. Crowd 2,731, around 150 from Rochdale.
The first half was remarkably similiar to Tuesday's match against Cheltenham. After starting brightly in attack Torquay looked vulnerable in defence. Rochdale should have taken an early lead when clean through but they thankfully mis-cued their shot terribly - a big let-off. But on 8 minutes a corner came over low, was dummied and Rochdale scored from an unmarked man in the box. Bodin equalised from great footwork and finish on 12 minutes. Then Torquay should have fallen behind but the ball crashed off the Torquay crossbar. Downes put Torquay in the lead from a corner and that's his second already this season. What a big asset Downes is proving to be at both ends. Mark Ellis may have won many headers from corners in the opposition box but he rarely got them on target. Howe should have scored with a 1-on-1 but on rounding the keeper, the keeper dived on the ball. At 2-1 up, Torquay finished the first half strongly.
Torquay continued the second half strongly and created many opportunities that they could not convert. Their keeper made some terrific saves and Howe shouldhave done better with his finishing. But Howe made ammends by scoring 2 goals. The first he finished well after a Nicholson thunderbolt was parried by their keeper. Howe's second was typical Howe what he does best. He used his strength to shrug off a defender about 30 yards out, approached the keeper and cooly lobbed the keeper after he commited himself. 4-1 and Rochdale were getting blitzed. It was turn for Torquay to rattle the crossbar through the impressive Bodin. Thompson, as well as creating chances on the right wing, hit a couple of fine shots that brought decent saves.
The game turned on its head in the 74 minute. Downes tugged down a Rochdale attacker in the box and got sent off for a professional foul. Poke brilliantly saved the penalty kick but Torquay fell to pieces. Cruise came on for Thompson who left to a standing ovation from the Bristow bench and went to right back with Oastler as centre back. It was all Rochdale and Torquay looked there for the taking. Poke made a couple more brilliant saves and there was a lot of last ditch defending by by the Gulls. Jarvis came on for Howe who got booked and was losing his cool. But things just got worse. Everything Jarvis touched he messed up and Torquay were struggling to clear their lines. Rochdale got one back on 85 minutes and you could not rule out them getting more as it was so one sided. Craig came on for Bodin. There was 5 minutes of added time but Torquay somehow survived the onslaught.
Today probably told me that Torquay have key players in the team like Downes, Bodin and Howe. And well done to our youth system bringing through Thompson - he was excellent today with blistering pace, crossing and shooting. In this respect Torquay can have a very good season. But there were real weak links in Cruise and Jarvis and players like Morris are very hit and miss. Without the above mentioned key players Torquay look there for the taking. Still, plenty of positives today and tons of entertainment, not forgetting the 3 vital points.
