Less than a week to go until the first competitive match of the season! As mentioned previously, Bodin will be away on international duty and although it is a honour for us, it won't be the last time this season although I think a lot of these fixtures clash with cup games. I can only see a few choices in midfield being an issue with Manse, Easton, Lathrope, Danny, Macklin and Morris gunning for five places. Although Leicester will expect to win, we have done well at home against championship sides such as Reading, Coventry and Blackpool in recent years and there is no reason why we can't do this again. For a lot of fans, this will be the first opportunity to see our team play against this side and from the top of my head think it was around 40 years ago that this opportunity arose. I suspect that there will be a good away following for this reason and also with an improving weather forecast, there are worse places to visit than Torquay in August! It is hard to say which Leicester players will start for this one but a familiar face will be that of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Top scorers last season and to watch out for are Nugent and Beckford with the latter finding the net twice in a recent PSF against Nuneaton.

As discussed on a previous thread, Danny and Macklin have joined Haplin and Craig on the injured list. www.torquayunited.com/news/article/11-from-14-307818.aspx So barring a late recovery, instead of six to fill five midfields places there are only four with Morris on the wing and the other three in the central positions. But who would you put on the left wing? Probably comes down to Cruise and Thompson and gut feeling is for the former.....

As discussed on a previous thread, Danny and Macklin have joined Haplin and Craig on the injured list. I would imagine that if they are all out, he will play safe with Easton in midfield and Jarvis and Morris wide. That would leave Rice, Leadbitter, McKenzie, Cruise, Sullivan, Yeoman and Thompson on the bench.

This is one of those games where we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. We are not expected to win and yet it’s a game that is winnable as anything as we know can happen in a football match.
If I was asked what would be said in any match reports we receive, then based on such games in the past, I would say the following. We looked the higher division team for most of the match, hit the post, crossbar, had one cleared off the line. Then right at the end they went and scored a goal and went through to the next round.
Well that’s the way so many games like this one have gone in the past have they not? I’m sure our boys will do all they can to win it as the big boys come into this cup in the next round and surely we fully deserve to play Man U at their place.
Good luck boys and hope to read some good reports on here later and also hear if the PA problems have been solved

Getting absolutely tanked, by the sounds. I wouldn't read much into it, though They looked to be a good quality championship side, reminded me a bit of QPR when they came here a few years ago and once Oastler made the wrong decision in dealing with a through ball, there wasn't really any coming back. I did enjoy the Leicester fans rendition of "I want to live here!" ;D I will do a fuller report in a bit.

A disappointing evening that turned into a stroll in the park for Leicester. Torquay fans had very little to cheer about as soon as Leicester took the lead on 21 minutes. Up until that point Torquay were well in the game and had the best chance through Morris. Morris was clean through but his shot was blocked and went for a corner. After that we did not really have any chances of note and did not create anything. Crowd 3,300+, 1,100+ from Leicester who filled their away allocation in the Bristow Bench. The only bright note tonight for me was the magnificent looking Bristow Bench. Sponsors MOTM Howe who hardly had a look in all night and was a very isolated figure.
Leicester first goal was an absolute gift by Oastler who had the ball in the penalty but dallied too long on it. He was robbed of the ball by Dyer who rounded Poke and scored from close range. Their second on 36 minutes was just like the one Leeds scored in pre-season. A free-kick from about 25 yards out was floated over the wall into the near top corner of the net with Poke nowhere near the ball.
The game was effectively sealed just after the break from a Leicester breakaway and Vardy added a fourth in the 77th. minute. There might have been more and it was good to see Poke making some decent saves. Leicester looked impressive and had a goal disallowed for offside and in the closing minutes were a whisker away on more than one occasion to making it five. Torquay made 3 subs in the second half with Cruise, Yeoman and Thompson coming on but just never got going against a vastly superior Leicester team. Thompson showed some hopee on the right wing and beat their full-back for pace more than once.
Tonight we desperately missed our flair, pacy players such as Bodin, Stevens and even Macklin if he carries his pre-season form into the season. We were too pedestrian. I thought Jarvis did pretty well in the first half on the right wing but Morris on the left wing offers little. And I'm afraid Morris shooting continued to be wayward like last season. As for the defence, one bright note was Downes alongside Saah. As for Poke, his shot stopping in the second half was decent but he needs to get more commanding and form a better communication with the defence. A disappointing start to the season and much work needs to be done. On tonight's showing we look vulnerable and I fear a slow start to the season. It is bad timing our first match is against new boys Fleetwood - we look there for the taking I'm afraid.

Totally outclassed but that was what I expected just look at the gap in league positions it says it all really. I had hoped we would compete better than we did and for me very little positive to come out of tonight we showed little quality or threat and had virtually zero shots on target as far as I can remember. Nobody to lift us when we needed it. Plenty of huff and puff with little effect Leicester were quicker to every ball and seemed to have two or three more players on the pitch the gap in class and quality shone through. Plusses for me Rene looked the only player that perhaps wouldn't have looked out of place in thie Leicester side. Jarvis showed some good quality and worked his socks off , Sahh and Downes look a good pairing Downes particularly looks a good quality replacement for Ellis and Lathrope was the pick in a midfield that was often over run. Poke doesn't quite look the same keeper we had here before and looks a shadow of the mountain we had here last season, a tough act to follow. Jo Oastler looked like he has missed the pre season and made some poor decisions one which cost us the first goal. Nico struggled against physically stronger opponents and his corner delivery was consistently poor. Morris no diferent to last season he wants it badly enough but always struggles to really deliver. Easton OK but never going to set the place alight. Mans? well just Mans bags of effort but totally ineffective against quality opposition. We desperately need a player to make the opposition think a bit and to his credit Thompson did pretty well in that role when introduced, raw yes but he did beat his full back and put in a good cross. Not really sure how to judge it as it was my first look at the side and the only way to know is when we start playing teams at our own level and ability. We will no doubt know a bit more after Saturday and Fleetwood who will be in party mood but I have a sneaky feeling that there will be a few surprise packages fighting it out at the top.

A poor result, I hope it does not dent the confidence too much for when the real 'bread and butter' stuff starts on Saturday. It would have been more concerning had we had the full squad available. Bodin will be back on Saturday and hopefully Macklin and Stevens as well (though I am not too sure about the status of their respective injuries). I would be content with a point on Saturday, it will be a tough test, Fleetwood will be up for it as their first league game and they seemed to play quite well against Forest yesterday.

So Lingy went for Jon's team with experience in the form of Morris and Jarvis on the wings. I thought they made a good go of it early on with Jarvis making a good run in the area and although it eventually rebounded out, meant the way was clear for Oastler to follow up with a good cross. Morris got into some space for a shot which may have been our best chance. However, Leicester looked a very good side, constantly pressurising and generally being that bit quicker and stronger on the ball, possibly just getting the rub of the green with the second goal a case in point. Their forward line of Vardy (glad he is still not with Fleetwood) and Beckford looked tasty but the first goal came from a long ball in that bounced on the edge of the area and in line with the side of the six yard box and under pressure from Dyer, Oastler tried to control it but got robbed with it then being a simple matter to slot the ball home. The second goal came when under pressure , the Leicester player shot at the goal which was well saved by Poke but then the ref decided a foul had been committed and took play back to the corner of the area where a very well taken free kick went straight into the top corner. Game over. Leicester started the second half well and scored very early on with some good passing to put their man clear in the area. Ling did change to 4-4-2 with Thompson on for Easton but it was all over really and although he didn't have much choice, Ling then brought on Cruise and Yeoman to give them much needed experience. Although we kept going it did leave us susceptible to counter attacks and Vardy made it four with an unmarked header after Poke had to scramble off his line. I thought Howe was quite isolated today, partly because of the need to defend in depth against superior opposition but also because in Bodin, Stevens ands hopefully Macklin, we didn't have the three players most able to get forward and threaten the goal. Downes was again impressive and will do well with Saah. Although his crossing wasn't quite up to his normal high standard, Nico stood out for me today. All in all, it was a good work out today and generally speaking, won't come out against such good opposition.

There are odd occasions when when the reality of our true place in the football pyramid really gets exposed and last night was one example. Spain v Ireland in the Euros came to mind as a very similar sort of miss match. Down to Earth with a bump we should now be under no illusions about the task ahead this season and as a squad will have to work extremely hard to gain any sort of success. It may just be the kick in the butt that pushes us on to better things. Lets hope so.
