You may recall that Torquay United replaced Aberdare Athletic in the Football League in 1927. Aberdare were one of 6 Welsh clubs in the Football League in the 1920s, and finished as high as 8th in the Third Division South
After relegation, though, the club went through several reincarnations and eventually ended up as Aberaman Athletic, playing in Division One of the Welsh Football League, the second tier of Welsh football
However, as of this season, the Aberdare name is back in Welsh football (for the first time since 1947) - the club have decided to rename themselves Aberdare Town, the original name of the club when it was founded in 1892. They are also reverting to the club's original colours of yellow and black, and building a new 300-seater stand at their ground Aberaman Park. The club's joint-managers are former Cardiff players Lee Jarman and Lee Phillips (as in the full-back who also played for Barry, Forest Green, Newport and Llanelli, not the former Torquay striker of the same name)
The reason behind it, much like down the road in Cardiff (though far less controversial for obvious reasons), is to try and widen the fan base and increase the commercial appeal of the club, particularly in the local area (which doesn't have much else to shout about). They won the 2008-09 Division One title but failed in their bid to get promoted into the Welsh Premier League due to the ground not meeting the WPL's standards. They are now making a big push for promotion, which would make them the first Valleys club in the Welsh top flight since Ebbw Vale folded in 1998
