It seems if it has rained for forty day and forty nights and one wonders when the rain is ever going to stop falling. It’s not just the fact it seems to rain everyday, it’s just how hard the showers are and the amount of water that falls from the sky.
It was not that long ago water companies had introduced hose pipe bans and yet here we are just a few months later having to drive through floods and hearing heart breaking stories on the news as people find their homes under water.
I’m not sure we should ever find ourselves short of water in this country; it has always seemed to me that over the course of any year, we do get plenty of rain. Maybe it’s just the case our population has grown so much over the years and we have failed to build new reservoirs to keep up with the demand.
It’s clear this current weather is having a major impact and must be costing so many people an absolute fortune in lost earning etc. Those beach side cafes must be wondering if they are going to take enough money during the summer months to keep them alive during the winter.
What about all the outdoor tourist attractions? Visitor numbers must be down and they must be wondering if there is even going to be a summer this year that will see a good number of paying customers.
As I have driven around the Southwest during my working day, I have been keeping an eye on the fortunes of our travelling fairgrounds. They have simply been empty and while you may feel fairgrounds have become far too expensive, they must cost a great deal to keep them going.
I watched one such fairground pack up last Tuesday and then struggle to try and get their vehicles out of the field they had set up in, some where still stuck in the field on Friday when I went past again and where unable to get to the town where they should have set up on the Wednesday.
Its no wonder people these days choose to go abroad on cheap holidays, I do feel sorry for our visitors here in the Bay who all seem to be walking around with such gloomy looks on their faces. This is the time of the year you have to pay top dollars to stay anywhere and you don’t want to spend your time having to put your umbrellas up.
I woke up to rain in the Bay this morning and then mid morning the sun came out and it looked like it might be nice for the rest of the day. But now the wind has picked up and the sky is grey once again and I’m sure we will see more rain again later.
One thing that has upset our younger members in the past here on the TFF, is us older ones going on about the good old days. They have rightly pointed out things that show that maybe things were not as good as we once thought, but did we dream how our summers were when we were young? Was it not the case that when you broke up from school for the six or seven week summer holiday, that the sun was out everyday and you could do such things as melt the tar on roads using your magnifying glass?
I have never known a year like this one where I had to keep on the central heating for so long after Christmas. I even put in on the other night as the house just felt a bit cold and damp, but that feeling may have just come about because of the weather having its effect on me.
I drove through the floods last Monday around Dorchester and when you see so much water its then you know we do get enough rainwater in this country, only as I said we let most of it go down the drain.
It does seem madness to me to see water that has been treated and made safe to drink, being used to flush toilets, wash cars, water plants in the garden etc. Maybe one answer is to ensure drinking water is only used for drinking and have systems in place where every home collects rain water and uses that for all the other things we need to use water for.
Maybe I’m a bit thick, but I thought global warming if it exists, was going to make things hotter and yet here we are in July needing to put on a coat to go outside due to the cold wind. It does make me wonder if there really is such a thing as global warming, or if it just a con to get even more money out of the working people.
What has been sad is seeing so many events having to be cancelled as they are right now. Everywhere I drive I see notices put up on boards that were advertising some event or other, have another notice stuck up on them, with the words “Cancelled due to the weather”
The world we live in has changed so much, yes some things for the better and some most defiantly for the worse. Is it the case that the seasons have now changed so much and we won’t have summers like we once did? Are we all really responsible for the changing seasons? Or is it just down to nature and that is something we have never had any control of.
