The new England manager has named the 23 players for 2012 Euro cup. What are your thoughts and views on his selections

I'm pretty much a neutral when watching England these days.
But if they play as uninspiringly at the Euros as they did against Norway, I'll be cheering for the opposition.

So many Liverpool selections despite the fact that they had a dire season, as opposed to the English players from the Man Utd side that nearly won the title, players that are well used to playing in a unit as Roy usually likes his teams playing

I see Gary Cahill is ruled out with injury. Martin Kelly of Liverpool has been brought in as an replacement as opposed to Ferdinand as youth over experience.
That is fine with me as I have already written off the Euro's and we should be looking to build towards the World Cup!

I don't remember Germany and Spain ever writing off tournaments before they'd begun. Spain in particular - they always used to go into tournaments as the dark horses
England only ever feel the need to say they're writing off a tournament because they believe they're good enough to win everything, despite evidence to the contrary. If expectations had been more realistic over the last decade, England fans would be expecting the same results as usual. England sides haven't got particularly better or worse over time - they've been a 7/10 team for every international tournament they've been in in the last 30 years and this one is no exception
In fact, the last time England had this many problems with injury prior to a major tournament was 2002, when they actually played quite well despite having Danny Mills and Trevor Sinclair in the starting XI

Football is like every other profession in the Uk.
The influx of foreign labour has led to supply being greater than demand.
So although we have spent billions on centres of excellence, improved training facilities and supposedly the coaching. The decision to select the biggest and strongest as opposed to the most talented, Eunan Okane being a prime example, has led to the products of this coaching system being pushed down the leagues. Add to this the FA`s refusal to look outside the Premiershite for an outfield player and what do you get youngsters from the scouse stiffs making up the numbers in the England squad.
This begs the question have the centres of excellence & training facilities been a waste of money? or
are the players overcoached and individual flair & confidence being driven out of the English game, or
are the players there but lower down the league and the FA needs to change its selection policy?
Personally I think, the game is so physical & quick in this country, quality is of little importance, hence clubs will not sadly go for the likes of EO.
I say bring back "Le God", Bowles, Worthington, Currie & Gazza to show them how to play
and
bring back Fowler, Shearer, Owen to show them where the net is
this squad is probably the most boring I have ever witnessed. quite how we will score 2 goals in a game is beyond me.
Not the managers fault, we simply lack any decent players.

Watching the England back four ponderously spray it about ("it's all about possession") only for our players to panic like headless chickens as soon as the ball is played into midfield is just embarrassing. I wouldn't mind if we played 'high tempo' or 'long ball', at least it would be something different. And what's Hodgson's obsession with Liverpool players? You could understand Buckle raiding the TUFC squad after he left, but surely an England manager is supposed to be above that sort of carry on? |
