Both Simon Rayner and Chris Robertson have been transfer listed according to the Herald. We are looking for a fee for Robertson but not for Rayner.

I'll admit I am surprised by both of these moves.
Rayner, yes I can see why we would want rid of him based on some of the temperamental showings he put up last season, but I would have expected us to ask for a fee, albeit small, given that other teams have apparently already shown an interest in him.
As for Robbo, well I can understand us taking the option on his services as he is a solid centre-half and could provide cover at right-back, but putting him straight on the list and asking for a fee seems a bit strange unless someone else has privately made an offer to him without speaking to us first. Having an unsettled player at the club can never be a good thing.

Raynor is no surprise, no problems with Rice playing in the Bath game, but Raynor should have been put back in for the Yeovil match. Understandably he was unhappy, but you may find Rice playing, may have been more to do with what he had been saying, to Paul Buckle.
I hear people going on about Raynor's attitude etc, well for a man dropped for an FA cup game, live on TV and then to not even be able to get his place back. Despite the fact that Rice was costing the team points, then moved to Boston, one league below.
He didn't come back with an attitude, I believe he came back and gave everything and his attitude looked spot on to me.
I have said it before, a word from above was the reason, Raynor returned, promotion slipping away, goal keeper problems, while we had our no 1 at Boston. No riff was ever healed and I'm sure once the season was over, Raynor had no future here.
The club must have now signed, or about to sign a keeper, still believe it will be Poke, Rayner has been kept on a bit of string, just in case we couldn't.
The problem for me is that must mean Martin Rice is staying. I have no problem with him, but I simply do not believe, he can improve very much. I fear for key games, when the no1 keeper is out, points will be dropped, that once again could cost us our place, where we all believe we belong.
Robertson I find very strange, made a hit when he came here, good squad player, maybe there will be more news soon, about a new signing.

I think both are good solid players but neither were Buckles men.We have plenty of cover in defence exept for left back so I think they should just let Robbo go,seams like he doesnt want to be here.Rayner never quiet did it for me last season, hopefully we get a match winning keeper in,Im sure Buckle has it sorted

Depends how desperate we are to get him off the payroll I guess. If freeing up his wage opens the door for his replacement, then that can only be a good thing. Whilst acknowledging his obvious ability, I would always question his reliability and professionalism after the shenanigans of last season. I'm afraid in most walks of life if you fall out with the boss you'll be the loser, and Rayner wasn't the boss! Scanning the list of PFA released players, three goalkeepers with regional connections who would each do a good job for us are: Steve Collis - Southend United and formerly of Yeovil. Gareth Stewart - AFC Bournemouth Chris Weale - Bristol City and again ex - Yeovil. Add these to Shwan Jalal and Michael Poke, and we should be able to obtain a better keeper than Rayner ever would be from that lot.

And thats the point Merse, each day clubs like TUFC will recieve calls from footballers and agents. They also recieve from the FA a "released list" that they can trawl through. I can assure you TUFC have a contingency. All professional clubs do.

Not surprised by the Rayner move and I suspect that that just means we are close to bringing on board a replacement. As Merse points out there are a number of good quality replacements that are on the market. The Robertson move is interesting. Does this indicate that perhaps a right back is close to being signed? Have to say I am a little disappointed in that I always rated Robertson a better prospect than Ellis - but I don't watch training everyday and nor do I have an insight into the confidence levels the players have in each other and the way they relate. That is what PB is paid to sort out and he will be the one who has to carry the can. I'll leave it to him for now

I have to agree that I would have preferred that we kept Roberson. Yong Mark Ellis looked good when he arrived, but to wards the end of the season, I felt he often looked poor.
Still he must have potential and can only improve with age and experience

Your right Dave, Mark Ellis has got bags of potential, I can asure you at high levels within the club, Mark is considered as a big future player. He is talked about in glowing terms. Its great that TUFC have now decided to look to the future whilst not compromising the player quality of the first team squad.

Can you tell me anymore about the Youth set up? what ages. will it be as it was before, players staying at the lodge etc.
I seem remember there was a change made some years ago, this meant we could only take young players from a certain area, not like we could before , when we could bring them down from up country. The likes of Lee Sharpe spring to mind

Im sure that I can put something together for the site, I am at Plainmoor tomorrow so will get some information from Matt & Paul. All the lads are from south Devon except two lads. One of the lads has got great potential.

Thanks your that Sean, I don't know why it was changed, that we could only have local lads, I feel as a result of the changes, players like Lee Sharpe May not get the same chance he had. Maybe over looked, or not considered good enough, by the big clubs, but being able as they were then, to come to clubs like Torquay, gave them that chance.

Sounds good Sean - you realise that I will be stealing all comments and rating the players as such for Football Manager 2009 don't you!!!
Helps my research no end as I was going to pop in and speak to Matt and Compo myself.
