A very interesting read, thanks for that Jon. Although Bruce Rioch was at our club in a time that I can hardly remember as I was a very young kid, I always think of him as a real old-school manager and a very good player for the club and am proud that he cut his teeth at the club and went-on to an illustrious career.
The piece really does tell me something about the formative years of his managerial career - it must have been incredible that one person undertook all the roles that he did when he was The Boss. Compare that to the 'proper footballing set-up' we have now - a proper physiotherapist, a club doctor, video analyst, goalkeeping coach (and kit man), assistant manager, players at the club undertaking their coaching badges and no doubt other roles that I have forgotten about. It is incredible that our club managed to function without those people! Whilst the footballing side of the club was cut-back to the very bone in the later Bateson years, the 1980's were really something else!
