Result: 2-3 (Hughes,Fowler,Barnes(p) ). Attendance: 2388. Wow - only 2388??? I was there, my only visit to Swindon, and I can't remember very much about the game at all. I'm surprised there weren't more at the game but in those days of the mid-80's attendances were falling... The team was Kenny Allen, Derek Dawkins, Colin Anderson, Brian Hughes, John Impey, Paul Compton, Mike Squire, Derek Fowler, Steve Cooper, Colin Barnes, Derek Hall. We ended that season in a typically-strong way, winning 6 out of the last 10 games, to finish up 9th but only 9 points ahead of Swindon in 17th. How about this for the last 10 games: Date | Opponents | | Score | Scorers | Att | 24 Mar | MANSFIELD TOWN | H | 1-0 | Hall | 1559 | 07 Apr | Darlington | A | 1-0 | Cooper | 1322 | 14 Apr | STOCKPORT COUNTY | H | 1-1 | Compton | 1503 | 21 Apr | Swindon Town | A | 3-2 | Hughes, Fowler, Barnes (pen) | 2388 | 23 Apr | READING | H | 2-2 | Barnes 2 (1 pen) | 2665 | 28 Apr | Colchester United | A | 0-3 | | 1226 | 02 May | CHESTER CITY | H | 1-0 | Wakefield | 1073 | 05 May | CREWE ALEXANDRA | H | 3-1 | Hall, Barnes, Squires | 1268 | 07 May | Rochdale | A | 0-1 | | 943 | 12 May | BLACKPOOL | H | 1-0 | Anderson | 1703 |
So we averaged 1628 at home for the last 5 games, and that was artificially boosted by the visit of Reading. Those were the days; records were 12" in diameter, food was rationed, everything was in black & white and we didn't have mobile phones. We never had it so good...

All thanks to our brand new manager - DAVID WEBB.And signings such as Derek Dawkins, Paul Compton, Tony Currie, Kenny Allen and Derek Fowler. That was a false dawn, wasn't it? [ Take a look at the pessimism expressed two-thirds of the way down the Swindon manager’s notes. That's not specifically for his club but for the game in general. That really was a sign of those times; I certainly can’t remember a time when football seemed to be more down on its luck. It’s amazing that all the clubs pulled through. As for 1984/85 Swindon finished 8th; we ended up in 3x8th place. They averaged 3,020; we 1,437. Meanwhile the wider season finished with Bradford City and Heysel. For a while people were saying that might finish the game. Thereafter, in 1985/86, Swindon won our division with Kenny Allen in goal. The Christmas game against them at Plainmoor attracted a mighty crowd of around 1,800.
