Here's another one for all those Charlton Athletic fans that have kindly read my thread on the Return to the Valley (I have a Mistress!)
These are a few private pictures taken from an album from possibly one of the original 'ground hoppers' as this album has photos of various games and grounds from around the country, dating from the late-fifties to the mid-sixties.
There is some confusion as the scrapbook suggests the game shown being one at home to Crystal Palace. But to be so surely it would be late sixties and therefore out of the date range of the rest of the album, and wouldn't there be a larger crowd?
Secondly, pasted into the pages next to these images is a programme for the home game against Huddersfield on the 25th of November 1961, so maybe it is that game.
If so these pictures are somewhat poignant as it was the last time prolific scorer Johnny Summers would be seen at the Valley. The striker, who had played 39 games the previous season, fell ill and after an operation in September was given 'weekend leave' to attend this game and seemed quite cheerful as he looked in on his team mates in the changing rooms. Unfortunately the illness was more severe than first thought and Summers died of cancer the following June. He played in two epic games, the 7-6 win over Huddersfield and the 7-4 victory over Portsmouth, both times scoring five goals, a club record-equalling feat.
So Jonny Summers may well be in these pictures, seated in the main stand.
The floodlights seen in the photos had just been erected, in September.
And note the message from Charlton's new manager, Frank Hill.
The last image was possibly taken at a different time to the others as it shows a snow-bound Sam Bartram turnstiles.
