Great to see a mention for my old man, David Tearse, just been surfing the net to see what I could find on him, found a couple of crackers! Always good to hear from family of ex-players. Some extracts from John Lovis's history of the club: 1971/72: "Edwards had entered the transfer market again paying a club record £15,000 fee for Leicester City striker David Tearse. This brave, bold, roaming front-runner unfortunately became another player to be cruelly hit by injuries but showed enough in the remainder of the season to confirm that initially it was money well spent". 1972/73: "the two main front men, Stubbs and Tearse, were plagued with injuries, and the former had to quit the game. Tearse was just hitting something like his true form when he broke a leg at Cambridge towards the end of the season". Although I was only a very young boy at the time, I remember a buzz when Tearse was signed for a big fee. He scored in every round of our Cup run to Round 3, but then injury struck and he missed a period when we just could not score - leaving us facing almost certain relegation. But on his return, he scored in four consecutive games - all against top clubs - and our haul of five points from three successive home games kept our hopes alive a little longer. The crowds for the three home games? 11,165 v Argyle, 6,478 v Notts County and 9,928 v Villa. To put those in perspective, Tearse's goalscoring comeback game had been at Brighton in front of 27,628 fans. As quoted above, more injuries dogged the following season culminating in the broken leg. What a shame. What might have been a great buy for TUFC turned out to be an unlucky buy and a potentially great career was unfulfilled through sheer bad luck. If Dave wants to share a few memories of his Plainmoor days, we would love to hear them.

Loyal gull - Yes I think the injuries took their toll on him. That said - he's almost twice my age and still as hard as nails. My only realy memories of him playing were when he had moved to semi professional. He would have been early thirties then and I remember him sticking about 6 goals past one team. Bit embarrasing really.
Jon - some really interesting info there. My dad obviously enjoyed his time at TU but I guess when your career is ended prematurely in any profession it can quite difficult to talk about it. He doesn't really talk about his footballing days much, not much of a bragger, but when I told him about this site and the fact that people still remember him it certainly put a smile on his face.
I've asked him if he'll write something in the near future and he said he would. I'll probably have to give him a hand as he's not built for the internet!!

I've asked him if he'll write something in the near future and he said he would. I'll probably have to give him a hand as he's not built for the internet!! That would be great if you could twist his arm and help him out. Some of my favourite threads on here have been when relatives of ex-players have got in touch. We had a guy whose late granddad, Albert Hutchinson, was a Torquay legend way back in the 30s. He was really chuffed when found information for him and he was able to share some old photos and memories with us. Then we had someone whose elderly father, Gordon Duck, played for our reserves - but not the first team - in the 50s. We pointed him at some old programmes and dug out some info and he said his dad's face lit up on hearing stories about his Torquay days.

Here's an article from the Herald when Tearse signed for Torquay. It was under a heading "Geordie of French ancestry tries to lift United". Interesting to read that Tearse rhymes with purse. I'd always thought it rhymed with "fierce". Can't believe I've had it wrong all these years!

We've discussed where players lived before: torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=tufchistory&action=display&thread=5918&page=2I see that Rags mentions David Tearse. Maybe we can find out for sure if our centre forward did live in Frobisher Green : Back in the early-to-mid 70's the club owned two houses opposite us in Frobisher Green, 6 and 8 I think. I know Eddie Rowles lived in one with his rather glam, blonde wife and two Basset Hounds; and I'd like to think Dave Tearse lived in the other but that might be my imagination.

At the suggestion of Jon, while responding to the Mortimer 1921/2 thread, I'm simply posting up the brief Leicester-centric bio of David Tearse from the 2010 edition of 'Of Fossils & Foxes', in the hope it's of some interest.
Tearse, David James b. Newcastle on Tyne, 7th August 1951 Career: North Kenton Boys Club; May 1969 CITY; Nov 1971 Torquay United; Jan 1975-loan-Reading; July 1975 Atherstone Town. City debut v Preston North End (A) 11.10.1969 (sub) A teenage Geordie striker given an early chance by Frank O’Farrell, David played his first full game for City as an emergency right-back at Ewood Park, and then had a brief run in competition with Ally Brown and Murray Brodie as a candidate for Andy Lochhead’s target-man role. After two further isolated appearances, he made an early departure when Jimmy Bloomfield started applying the chequebook to rebuilding his First Division forward line. David, whose £15,000 fee was a Torquay record, was unable to save his new club from relegation to the basement in 1972, but scored 23 times in 77 League starts across four unfortunately injury-hit seasons at Plainmoor. David later settled for some time in Nuneaton before returning to the North East. LCFC Apps: FL 7+1; FAC 1+2; LC 0+1. Goals: FL 1.
