On what will probably be a freezing cold Tuesday night - on January 24th 2009, Torquay will contest their first ever League encounter at "THE DRIPPING PAN" - home of LEWES FC.
The original purpose of this ground is unclear, though local legend suggests that it was part of a salt making industry, run by monks from the nearby Cluniac Priory.
The spoil from the excavation activity forms a mount which overlooks the ground even today. This dates from around 1745.
I have visited "The Pan" on numerous occasions over the years, but the transformation in recent times is remarkable.
A 500 seater stand has replaced the old wooden South Stand - which ran the length of the pitch, located on the top of a grass bank.
A "tidy" little stand looks out over the ground, from behind the goal.
And finally, an away terrace has been accomodated - even though removal of a section of flint wall was neccessary, upsetting some locals in the process!
Nowadays, "The Pan" (not to be confused with a type of pizza base) has a capacity of 3000 - of which 600 is seated.
For those of you who haven't visited this "quirky" little ground in deepest, darkest, East Sussex............ here's what to expect.
These pictures were taken on the evening of that disastrous 3-1 thumping at Crawley, back in August.
THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE GROUND AND THE REAR OF THE PHILCOX STAND VIEWED FROM THE CAR PARK - THIS WAS BUILT IN 2003, AND IS BEHIND THE WEST GOAL.
THE OBLIGATORY "BLUE SQUARE" WELCOME BOARD.
LEWES FC'S "OWN" WELCOME BOARD - WITH THE DATE OF THEIR FORMATION.
LOOKING ACROSS THE PITCH FROM THE PHILCOX.
TO THE RIGHT, THE 500 SEATER ROOKERY STAND (BUILT 2006). AT THE FAR END, THE TERRY PARRIS OPEN TERRACE (OR THE HAM LANE END)BUILT 2007 - HOME TO THE VISITING FAN.
THE GRASS BANK WHICH FLANKS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE GROUND.
THE AWAY SECTION IN ALL ITS GLORY - WRAP UP WARM AND BRING AN UMBRELLA IF YOU PLAN TO VISIT - JUST IN CASE!!
SIDE ELEVATION OF THE PHILCOX STAND - THE OLDER BUILDING ALONGSIDE IT HOUSES THE DRESSING ROOMS, OFFICES AND THE CLUBHOUSE.
VIEW ACROSS THE GROUND FROM UP ON THE GRAVEL PATH AT THE TOP OF THE BANK.
