Who was Torquay's oldest first-team player?
If the 'Official Centenary History' statistics are to be believed then surely it must be Frank Womack. Born on 16 September 1888, this would have made him 41 years 210 days old when he made his last appearance at right back against Exeter on 3 May 1930.
This would surely beat any outfield player (despite any claims made by Dave Webb) and also another candidate Neville Southall who, ironically, was born exactly 70 years later then Womack on 16 September 1958.
I turn this question over to Jon, Barton Downs and all our other resident historians!

There is some confusion over Kenny Allen's date of birth. Most sources give 1949, but the expert on these matters Michael Joyce says 1948. If Michael is right (and he usually is), Kenny's Wembley appearance just pips Big Nev for the silver medal position. I don't think any other player over 40 has played for TUFC in a competitive first team game since 1927.

Thank you kindly Jon.
With Christmas just hours away and still no shopping done, I'm not not quite sure why this matter is the one which is top of my list of priorities right now but such is life!
As a silent observer of the History Room, I have spent many an enjoyable hour and learned endless amounts from reading the various threads. I would like to thank Jon, Barton Downs and all the other contributors and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

It's good to hear that others find some of it interesting. I would also like to add a big thanks to Timbo for all the programmes he shares. Top work Timbo, much appreciated. Merry Christmas to all - see some of you on the Pop on Boxing Day.

Thank you from me as well. And to Timbo for the programmes. And what of a hundred years ago? From my side of the Torquay Town-Babbacombe divide, the less said about Boxing Day 1911 the better. Not a good season all round for us Babbacombe boys:

Interesting article on Kenny Allen in today's Indy which confirms his DOB as 1948 - making him 41 years old when he played at Wembley and TUFC's second oldest player behind Womack. It mentions that at the time it was claimed he was only 37. "..... because an earlier manager of mine, keen to sell me to another club, had told them I was four years younger than I actually was! I saw no harm in going along with that, so spent the remainder of my career living the "white lie"".

If it was the manager I think it might have been, the alternative would have been to set fire to him and claim him on the insurance!

They must have been bloody slapdash administrative processes to be able to sneak four years past another club - didn't they check that sort of thing when they gave a medical?! That said, I recently watched some highlights of our 87/88 season (which of course included Kenny Allen in most if not all the matches) - a pre match warm up consisted of a chat and some pot shots I front of the mini-stand!
As a child, Kenny Allen seemed as old as time itself to me - and bloody scary! Mind you, Jim McNichol, David Cole, Phil Lloyd and John Impey were all hard as nails and probably gave as good as they got when Kenny went mad at them!
