It’s quite an eye-opener to realise that Torquay Town in 1910 were able to beat a team from the Isthmian League that was between FA Amateur Cup final appearances in 1906 and 1913. That either says much for the quality of the Plymouth & District League in those days (we finished 5th behind Millbrook, Argyle Reserves, Exeter Reserves and Oreston) or not much at all about the standard of senior amateur football in the South East. It certainly sounds impressive for the Town to be described as “West Country professionals”.

I've got in touch with the man behind the Oxford City site and he has sent me this little beauty: More on the mysterious Harold Tabernacle to follow!

More on the mysterious Harold Tabernacle to follow! At the risk of stealing your thunder I see Tabernacle nabbed a couple of goals in the 1906 FA Amateur Cup final. That's been tucked away in one of my books for years without me noticing.

Worth bumping this thread and copying in some comments from the old "United's internationals thread": ....we certainly had the Oxford City and England Amateur keeper John SHIPPEY registered at the end of the 1968/69 season. Shippey played for us in a Plainmoor friendly against Stoke – we lost 1-2 with Micky Cave putting one past Gordon Banks - in April 1969 and it was part of the deal that we played a friendly at Oxford City in May 1969 – Kenny Sandercock scored in a 1-1 draw.... According to W.J.Luscombe, we had another Oxford City and England Amateur international playing for us before the Great War. He reported that Harold Tabernacle was so impressed with Torquay Town’s hospitality at a “smoker” after our 1910 FA Cup tie that he agreed to play for us.... I haven’t found any record of Tabernacle actually playing for Torquay and I can’t find any record of him playing for England either. He was a centre-forward of some repute however – he scored twice for Oxford City in the 1906 FA Amateur Cup final. The Tabernacle for Torquay mystery has now been solved - he actually played for Torquay Town four weeks BEFORE the cup match at the White House Ground. The two cup games with Branksome Gasworks torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/7731/great-day-out-1910-styletook their toll and Wally Cudlipp, Simmonds and Germain were too knackered to take their places as selected the following Saturday for a Plainmoor friendly with Royal Naval Barracks. In came stalwart of the original Torquay United Bert Drury at full back, a first-team debut for 15 year-old Stanley Reed on the left wing torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/7367/stanley-reedand Jimmy Meager moved to right-half to accommodate the famous Harold Tabernacle at centre-forward. Tabernacle appears to have played his last game for Oxford City a fortnight before, but this Torquay Town appearance seems to have been a one-off. Town were thrashed 6-2, not helped by Exeter-based Malta-born Harry Singlehurst leaving early to catch a train back to Exeter!

So were Torquay Town the team in hoops? Dave at Www.historicalkits.co.uk has TTFC in red, so it would be interesting to know what the colour scheme for the hoops were? Perhaps black and white which was then just carried on for TUFC MKII?

Thanks, Jon. So are you suggesting that the blue trim on the red Torquay Town shirts that Historical Kits displays, should be black? Likewise, the blue socks should be black? I rather like the crimson and blue - even had a bespoke subbuteo team painted up in those colours many years ago - so will be gutted if that’s the case. Red and black is rather bog standard too. Nevermind. I’m not sure if you have contributed any to that site but I’m sure they’d appreciate your insight into Kit history etc.

Worth bumping this thread up as Oxford City return to Plainmoor after 108 years +.
On 23 November 1910, it was 3-1 to Torquay on a soaking wet pitch in front of a 3,000 gate with our third goal coming from our star player C.Evans.
A repeat of that today would do nicely.
