This would go down as one of the best games I have ever witnessed - in terms of both quality and excitement.
Swindon were absolutely flying at the time and had just beaten Arsenal to reach the semis of the League Cup which, for the benefit of younger readers, was taken seriously by the top clubs in those days.
Mike Green's team was at the very peak of its powers and ripped in to them in breathtaking style. We led three times, but Swindon came back each time to equalise - the last one through Andy Rowland (who Mike Bateson was convinced Dave Smith thought he had signed when he signed the other Andy Rowland) five minutes from the end.
There was still time for Donal Murphy to crack in a scorching 30-yard winner only for it to be disallowed as a United player had been pushed over and lay prostrate in the box. A gutting end to an enthralling evening's entertainment.

I was there too and whilst my memory is not quite as good as Jon's, I do recall it being a fantastic game with a real cup tie atmosphere in a crowd of nearly 6,000.
One name in their team stands out for me - Roy Carter, who later joined the Gulls before ending up at Bodmin where I came up against him in a SW league game some years later.

john i think you will find it was my goal that was disallowed and not from donal Of course, you are right Smiffy. I hesitated as to whether Donal was the player in the offside position or the player who hit the shot. I can usually get away with guessing because no other buggar can remember! Yes, it was a Dave Smith 30-yarder disallowed for a Donal Murphy offside - could have been nearer 40 yards actually. While you are here , can you clear up one thing for us. Legend has it that you once shat in the communal bath at Plainmoor after being substituted in a game. Is this true or is it an urban myth?

Funnily enough, my comment on this game mentions Dave Smith, the manager, signing Andy Rowland (not the real one).
Dave Smith, the player who hit the 50-yarder against Swindon, is not the same man - just in case any of our younger readers are getting confused.

One of the great games...
Even though the fine details had all but gone from the brain, the feeling of excitement of the match remained.
