The Bundesliga game in Cologne this afternoon was cancelled at short notice as the referee Babak Rafati tried to commit suicide before the game.

Yes, I could hardly believe what I was hearing on the radio. Obviously a lot of room for speculation so it will be interesting to see how the story develops in the coming days. It seems Babak is now in a stable condition. |

I was hoping this thread would attract a bit more interest, I look enviously at 49 comments on the TFF Curry Club thread. Babak was suffering from depression which after the recent suicides of Robert Enke and Gary Speed casts a very dark shadow over modern day football.

I was hoping this thread would attract a bit more interest. Babak was suffering from depression which after the recent suicides of Robert Enke and Gary Speed casts a very dark shadow over modern day football. A bit surprising that the connection hadn't been made. Refereeing is a tough job and the best you can hope for is not to be noticed in a game but invariably you will attract the abuse of at least one set of supporters! Whilst there can be an element of pantomime about, it certainly is a job where you need to be thick skinned and/or professional and for anyone suffering from depression, then the trials and tribulations of going onto a football pitch at the centre of attention can be daunting. I wish Babak well and hope he continues his recovery.... |

Babak was twice voted as the worst referee in the Bundesliga by the professional footballers, can you imagine what pressure that put him under before a game. I would be interested in the referees nomination for the worst player in the Bundesliga.

On the other hand I remember a fan saying to Bruce Springsteen that he felt he knew him through the songs (indicating he was a nice guy), the fan then said; 'do I know you' to which Bruce replied very clearly; 'NO'. |

I was relating it to the lower league experience but I would imagine the pressure is increased exponentially towards the top of the game to get those marginal decisions right!
However, there have been some howlers over the years with particular examples being given three yellow cards and the ball bouncing 18 inches over a goal line and still not given! So in some respects, the introduction of goal line technology can only be a good thing as this surely is one of the game's biggest decisions and not beforehand catches up on other sports with the closest example being the square leg umpire, unable to give a run out decision and a goal is probably more important than a wicket in cricket!
