Reading the story In the Herald Express, It seems Wayne Carlisle, feels he Is now starting to win over the fans. He said "I knew I was going to get a rough ride from some fans, regardless of how I did at the start,"
I take It he felt that would be the case, because not only did he play for city last season, he scored two goals In the Blue Square Premier Play-Offs games against Us.It Is true he was given stick by some of the fans, were some just doing It because he was a city player, before he signed for us?
So was Lee Phillips and also Todd, I do not seem to remember them getting loads Of stick from the TUFC fans. I believe Carlisle, had a slow start with us and took some time to find his feet and that was more the reason he came under fire by some.
If there were any fans who wanted to shout abuse to him, just because Of last season, then I ask, what sort Of fan are you? The day Wayne Carlisle put on a Torquay United shirt, he was a Torquay player and every single fan should have been giving him their whole support, from the very start.
In all the years I have been going to watch Torquay play, I have never seen things like they are now, a player seems not to be playing well and soon the abuse starts to flow.It Is not that many who are doing It, the trouble Is they tend to have the biggest mouths and make no mistake the players hear It all.
In the games I saw Wayne Carlisle play last season, I was always impressed with him, I did think he was a bit dirty with some Of his tackles, I never disliked him, but at that time he was a city player and so I think, I just wanted not to like him.
I was really pleased when we signed him and why should It matter what team he came to us from, he was not some bad boy, just a very good football player, who could bring much to our team.I did feel for him, when things weren't working for him at the start Of the season, but he carried on and worked to get his game back up to what we know he Is more than capable Off.
You never know, he could end up at the end Of the season as our top goal scorer, or even the player Of the season and If he does I hope those who gave him such stick, will be the first in line to say well done and sorry we got It all wrong about him.
Lets hope he maintains the form he Is now showing, but should It dip a little, Or he makes a bad pass, or puts In a few poor crosses, I hope those fools don't start shouting their abuse again, but just try and understand that players like him, will always give everything he has to the game he Is In, just sometimes try as he might, It simply may not be his game to shine.
