I have mentioned before the Torbay Association club that played at the Rec in the 1890/91 season and played against Argyle in the Devon Senior Cup.

The club folded after one season when Torquay Athletic returned to the Rec. A different club of the same name was founded in 1895 with its home at Paignton Green.
A couple of articles from around the time of the formation of the original club beg a couple of questions:
The above article from 11 July 1890 mentions the involvement of a former Aston Villa player with an international cap. Can anyone pin down who this might be? The haystack isn’t as large as you might think as international football had only been around for eighteen years, but I suppose you cannot rule out the possibility that the international cap is a bit of Luscombe-esque exaggeration or misunderstanding.
The second article from 8 August 1890 shows that a Mr Miller took on the roles of chairman and of treasurer. I wonder if this could be Frederick Alvah Miller, a New Yorker residing at Ashfield in Barton Road?
It might seem strange to think that an American could be at the forefront of local "socker", but he was certainly at the heart of the local cricket scene – constantly asking questions about the finances of Torquay CC and tirelessly raising funds for the club through putting on theatrical shows. He would become vice president of Torquay CC but his warnings of financial problems came home to roost as the club was forced to close down after the 1900 season – unfortunately he had died by the time the club restarted for the 1903 season.
It could be argued that this Mr Miller would not have had the time for a dual role in a football club as his daughter Agatha* was born a month after the article was published. However, I don’t suppose that a nineteenth century gentleman with a private income would exactly be up to his elbows in dirty nappies.
The proposer of the motion to form the new club was Mr J. Harrison who we saw playing for Excelsior back in 1887/88 and who would go on to donate the silver cup to the Torquay and District League when it was founded in 1903.
If anyone can shed any light on our Aston Villa international or confirm or deny the identity of our Mr Miller I would be very grateful.
*Agatha Miller (later Christie) was previously discussed here:
