.........Well, gang - just thought I'd start off this cheeky thread, we're a broad church on here so not just bands, but solo acts, musicals, theatre shows, etc - lets' get all the "grubby little secrets" out! - heres' mine anyway, I'm going to split 'em into a few categories, I think - BIG names, slightly lesser known names, names no-one but me probably will have heard of, musicals and the like and also theatre-type shows a la Jethro, Jim Davidson etc - think you got the picture! - no need to be shy, Roger Whittaker is NOT the enemy (although I believe Lord_Tanktop is still searching local car boot sales for that elusive live DVD of Rogers') and Jon will be pleased that on this occasion no Cliff (Hi, fans...) on the menu, thank the Lord, I'd never get another papadom off him otherwise........

Jo Brand, Jim Davidson (loads of times, probably the most memorable was when on the very last night of a summer season at the Princess, he was still in the Sprat and Mackerel in Brixham at showtime, we had to wait about two hours or so while they got him and sobered him up a bit, and to his eternal credit, he stayed and did a fantakkers show till about 2.30 am, a few had to go home but most of us stayed and it was more like "An Audience With" in the end - he even sang "Maggie" and a couple of Pink Floyd numbers!!), Michael Barrymore (loads of times likewise - ultimate professional and bloody hilarious), Jethro (loads of times likewise - always fresh material - excellent), Jimmy Cricket, Roger Whittaker, Richard Digance, Ken Dodd (The Master his Doddy self - faultless), Val Doonican, Danny La Rue (excellent also), Cannon and Ball, Sinbad from Brooky in Snow White!!!!, Freddie Starr (the words "sheer filth" ain't enough!!), Little and Large, Barron Knights, Gary Wilmott, Chubby Brown, Reeves and Mortimer, Mike Osman, Tom Pepper, Joe Longthorne, Andy Eastman (supports Ken Dodd, ace ukelele player), The bleddy Roly Polys.............

.............and probably a hundred more I can't remember, all in all not so bad for a 50 year old eh!, cheers to each and every one of 'em listed above, mines a large Jack (no coke or ice), COYY Sat!................

Waterboys in 'Lesser Lights' and then The Fields Of The Nephilm in 'Big Names! Are you mad?

I've got house plants that go out more than me nowadays but my last concerts were at the Wolverhampton Civic and included The Henry Rollins Band, Therapy and Pantera. Luckily that left me with the special deafness that overcomes me when watching football/rugby/cricket on the sofa or out driving with the missus!!

You must have a big diary there Mr W .... I just wouldn't have a clue! Saw everybody at the 3-day Reading Festival in 1971 (they included Rory Gallagher, Ralph McTell, Lindisfarne, Wishbone Ash, Arthur Brown, Sha Na Na) but about 60 to 70 bands in all.

Went to three one day events in London two at the Oval and one at The Valley. The Who were in two of them, Rod Stewart and the Faces when Maggie May was top of the charts, Genesis, Focus, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Wishbone Ash, and others.

I also went to a poorly attended one day event in West Cornwall where they had Meatloaf, 10CC, Chuck Berry and several other groups.

Local venues were the Van Dike Club in Exmouth Road, Plymouth, and concerts at the ABC Theatre and Guildhall in Plymouth and the Town Hall and Pavilions in Torquay, with occasional visits to the Colston Hall in Bristol.

Groups seen locally included Free, Fleetwood Mac, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Deep Purple, Edgar Broughton Band, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Stray, Wishbone Ash, Pink Floyd, Mott the Hoople, Groundhogs, Renaissance, Kossoff Kirk Tetsu & Rabbit, Sharks, Lindisfarne, Renaissance, Amazing Blondel, Medicine Head, Canned Heat, Jethro Tull, John Miles, Status Quo, Nazareth, Hawkwind, Ashton Gardner & Dyke and as they used to say in the music disc adverts in the 1980's many many more.

Best of the lot? Andrea Bocelli - seen 3 times twice at Wembley and once at Hyde Park.

I`ve seen Wishbone Ash and went back stage after the gig and discovered their a bunch of Cokeheads, been back stage with The Sweet as well. Went to Glastonbury to see Chili Peppers only to be told that Flea had a cold so they cancelled but even better was to replace them, the one and only Rolf Harris, he was brilliant, he had 60,000 poeple eating out of the palm of his hand, what a legend!

The band I was in well over a decade ago ( Force 10 ) were lined up for a big gig in the town hall supporting Hawkwind only for the council health and safety Nazis to tell Hawkwind (Birdfart) that they couldn`t use pyrotechnics, well Hawkwind pulled the gig and played elsewhere and got another band that was local to that area to support them, thanks Torbay Council you feckin` winkers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not really a massive fan of live music. In an appropriate venue live music can be fantastic. But too often the venue isn't suitable and what should be a great experience turns into an irritating one at the time and a disappointing one afterwards. Most of the best music I've seen have been small/unknown acts when the added element of surprise made it all the better. My standout 'big acts' are probably Black Sabbath (NEC, late '90s) – terrible, no wonder Ozzy went down the Reality TV route to fund his 'retirement', Neil Young (Hyde Park) – awesome, Pixies (Brixton Academy) – didn't disappoint, Arcade Fire (O2) – not really my cup of tea but superb live.

Lambie the sound engineers are supposed to get the sound balance right for the venue so it doesn`t sound shite, all to often they are lazy and don`t do all the sound checks required to get it right. Then saying that it`s a different venue when it`s empty compared to when it`s full, the crowd filling the place can change the acoustics, a good sound man can allow for this but all too often they will just up the volume of the back line to compensate and spoil the balance! Some venues I`ve been to are just not right for live bands due to the stucture of the building i.e low ceilings and too wide with no real depth, a bit like playing in an enlarged cereal box that`s been laid over on it`s side, the music just bounces around the place and more or less kills it`s self.
The biggest problem is agents booking venues and not taking sound engineers with them to see if the venue is suitable for the style and volume required to pull off a good gig, they just worry about ticket sales!

Yeah, Aus, the sound can often be awful, which seems absurd for what is supposed to be a mostly aural experience. If any of us went to the cinema and saw a jerky picture in low resolution we'd be asking for our money back. The same expecations don't apply to live music for some reason

But it's not just the sound quality. The atmosphere of the crowd, access to the bar, the amount of oafs in the vicinity, the mood of the performers,songs selected etc...all can make for a miserable evening if they become a nuisance.
