Result: 1-4 (King). Attendance: 5040. A strange result with us heading the table after 17 games with a game in hand being thrashed 4-1 at home by lowly Stockport County. We had just lost our goalkeeper Terry Adlington with an injury which would finish his career so this was some introduction for his replacement Mike Turner. I can remember disbelievingly hearing the result come through on the radio whilst sitting on a train at Plymouth Railway Station, and feeling rather guilty about missing a home game as that afternoon I had been to Home Park to watch a 2-2 draw in a Second Division (now Championship) game between Argyle and Wolverhampton Wanderers. About six weeks later we got another home drubbing 4-0 to Darlington. Interesting looking at the league table. It is commonly said that you should wait until you have played 15 games before judging how the season is going to go, but we were the only one of the top six at that stage to get promoted (we finished 3rd). The other promoted teams Doncaster Rovers (1st) were in 11th place, Darlington (2nd) were in 9th place, and Colchester United (4th) were in 7th place. Bradford City who would later advance to the Premiership and back again were rock bottom in 24th place, although they had beaten us 4-1 in the opening game of the season, whilst 10 clubs are no longer in the Football League (Chester, Luton Town, Barrow, Bradford Park Avenue, Southport, Newport County, Stockport County, Halifax Town, Lincoln City, and Wrexham).
