The Annual Charity Bowl- Buckland Athletic 6 Plymouth Parkway 2
League winners Buckland were up against Thorgmorton Cup winners Plymouth Parkway in the annual Charity Shield match. This year the match was held at Okehampton Argyle FC’s Simmons Park Ground.
As the Buckland players walked out a serious lack of players was evident and a couple of the players in the starting line-up were carrying slight knocks, but Buckland’s ‘never say never’ attitude would surely be tested today.
The starting line-up for Buckland was:
Ken Griffiths, Liam Drew, Dean Stevens, Ben Williamson, Cameron Kelly, Mike Booth, Si Revell, Marc Revell, Liam Moseley, Gary Fisher and Antony Lynch.
And the substitutes were:
Neil Montandon, Lucas Burgess and Tom Kelly.
Heavy showers came down as the game started and both teams had numerous chances in the opening minutes, both Buckland and Plymouth Parkway had to get used to the pitch as the grass was slightly longer than what pitches were normally like.
The first real chance came on 5 minutes when Si Revell made a storming run down the left, he crossed the ball over the keepers head and at the far post was Liam Moseley in the right place at the right time to blast the ball home. Plymouth Parkway then started to show more of a fighting spirit and new signing for the Bucks Ken Griffiths was forced to make some good saves off the Parkway forwards... Parkway pulled a goal back on 34 minutes and this sent a message to the Buckland supporters that it wasn’t going to be all their way but then on 37 minutes Gaffer Lynch scored Buckland’s second of the afternoon, he found space inside the box and fired an unstoppable shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net, surely Lynchy will be more than a bench warmer this season!!!
The half time score was 2-1 to Buckland.
Buckland knew that Parkway would come out to get them but Buckland scored again through Liam Moseley on 63 minutes and new old boy Gary Fisher who firstly scored on 65 minutes but then Parkway brought on Chris Wright and pulled a goal back on 69 minutes. Gary Fisher then scored again for the bucks and his second goal was goal of the match when he fired over the Parkway keepers from fully 35 yards out in the 76th minute.
Si Revell then closed the scoring on 78 minutes when a free kick was taken by him on the edge of the box was blasted in to round off the scoring 6-2.
Buckland brought on a player for the future Neil Montandon outfield who replaced Liam Moseley after he was worn out and run himself into the ground. Neil showed some excellent touches and laid the ball well, he must have a chance of a starting position and no I’m not meaning between the posts which is his normal position!!!
The referee brought an end to proceedings and Buckland had retained the Charity Bowl and with it their 1st piece of silverware of the new season. With new signings of Gary Fisher, Dean Stevens and Ken Griffiths things look very bright for the Yellows!!!
My Man of the Match- the whole team, an all round brilliant performance from the Yellow Army!!!
