the signing of an Austrian goalie today got me thinking of how many different nationalities of players we have had.
English Welsh Scots Northern Irish Southern Irish Austrian American (Jurgen Sommer) Australian (Andy Petterson) Iceland (Oli Goatsforeskin and Ivar Ingamarsson) French (numerous) Grenada (Bedeau) St Vincent (Rodney Jack)
please add to this list

One of the more obvious has to be our Dutch policeman Arjan van Heusden Narada Bernard played once for Jamaica Kevin Amankwaah's parents are Ghanaian and he has stated his desire to play for them internationally, so that just about counts Neil Gregory was born in Zambia (no, I didn't know that either). And on a similar note, Justin Newell apparently was born in Germany. This is according to Wikipedia btw...so who knows if it's true or not? Liam Rosenior's father played for Sierra Leone...though that is a bit tenuous

Don't forget the "United 's Internationals" thread from 2009: www.torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=tufchistory&action=display&thread=2451&page=1This mentions several UK-born players who've played for non-UK international teams including Mark Hall (Barbados), Paul Hall (Jamacia) and Darren Moore (Jamacia) to which we can now add Jake Thomson (Trinidad and Tobago). As for players born overseas, not sure if that thread picked up Simon Rayner - Canada U20 and U23. The links between "nationality" and place of birth aren't always clear cut. Our first Football League manager, Percy Mackrill, was South African-born. By the age of eighteen he was playing for Bradford Park Avenue and later for Rotherham and Halifax. I wonder if Jon can tell us whether old Percy spoke with a South African accent or was he Yorkshire? Other “overseas born” TUFC players include Jack Butler (1930s – Ceylon); Dave Chadwick (1970s – India); Roy Fursdon (1930s - Canada), Benny Laryea (1980s - Ghana) and Danis Salman (1990s – Cyprus). And, as a youngster, didn't Robbie Herrera express an interest in playing for Spain?

I'm currently reading Africa United by Steve Bloomfield. I've just reached page 118 where there's a reference to the Brixton-born Taiwo Atieno who we currently have on trial:

Danis Salman was Turkish Cypriot and Hakan Hayrettin was born in Enfield to Turkish Cypriot parents. I was very lucky to see Amir Hashemi play against Swansea City in the Leyland Daf Trophy. I think we won 3-1 and he might well have scored. I see from Wikipedia he currently resides in the Netherlands and played for Tehran giants Esteghlal before his little spell at Torquay and then went to Vasas Budapest before returning to Esteghlal after a spell with San Francisco Bay Blackhawks playing with Eric Wynalda and Marcelo Balboa who both went on to play for the USA national team.
