Disappointing crowd of nearly 2,200 - we need to get back those fans who have deserted us for what ever reason. That's 300 down on the last game (£5,400 based on the adult price of £18). Less money means less to spend on trying to entice players to Plainmoor.
No sign of Charnock, Robbo or Wayno.
Not sure why the ref didn't initially award the Stonewall Jackson penalty for the push on Benyon. Perhaps he was partially sighted, if so he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a football ground. There was another incident when a Torquay player was pushed in the back, not seen by the referee.
Benyon didn't take the penalty well but had the foresight to follow up and clip the ball over Barry the Roche. 1 nil and playing against 10 men for 80 odd minutes. Let the goal feast begin or not as was the case.
Morecambe played the ball well and on the ground with Duffy running rings around the ever retreating defence. We seemed to fall a sleep when the ball appeared to be going out only to be banged in 1 all.
I thought Kee would be the Akinfewallet type player we needed but so far hasn't delivered. I'm sure once that confidence goal goes in we will reap the rewards.
The introduction of the lively Rose and Hemmings in the second half perked things up and Rose captured in my MOM a cracking goal from 20 odd yards out giving BTR no chance.
O'Kane hit a beautiful volley against the bar (17 times?)
Morecambe then brought on a sub who had the misfortune to be the shortest and ugliest player I've seen at Plainmoor in quite a few years. Anyway he was soon dispatched to return the ring to Mount Doom for kicking out. Down to 9 men.
Can't remember if Benyons goal, handed to him on a plate by Zebs was before Frodo left the field or after. Still I couldn't cheer to much as I had us to win 2 - 1, bugger as unlucky Alf would say.
Have to say that Zebs earnt his 4th booking for kicking the ball out of BTR's hands - why?
Felt sorry for Senda who had to go off with a hamstring but was covered well by Ostler.
Lets be having you missing folk back at Plainmoor before we have sub 2000 crowds.
Ratings (worked out on the Tweenaway School method - 5 being average)
Bevan - 6 (not much to do) Nicho - 6 Ellis - 6.5 Branston 7 Senda 6 Macklin - 5.5 (tried but didn't succed) Wroe 6.6 Oastler 7 Zebs 7 Benyon 7 Kee 5.5
Rose 8 Hemmings 5.5 O'Kane 7

Even my mother noticed how sparse Plainmoor looked today on the news. She reckoned the stay-aways were all in Newton Abbot ASDA! On my way to the game I didn't notice any broken down coaches on the St Marychurch Rd or see abandoned minibuses on Jacks Lane either. It was easy to pick out faces today and good to meet a few forum members for the first time. Att: 2,172 not good. Well your guess was closer than mine! Can`t believe that no-one has mentioned that Ref, with out his two linos we were done for, I`ve never seen such blatant attempts at cheating in my life. He was never gunna give the pen and he certainly didn`t want to send their lad off who had brought down Elliot in the box, last man standing and a goal scoring opportunity, the ref was right on top of it and had to be forced into the descision by his lino! Disgracefull officiating, I`m sure he had a Shrimpers shirt on under his refs top. Footage should be sent to the F.A so that this idiot can be brought to book and bloody well sacked or repremanded accordingly, could easily have strung him up by the roof stantions after the game and just let swing in the wind! That`s better, need to get that out of the system! A much needed win and a much deserved one ( no thanks to you know who) Morecambe are a half decent outfit with plenty of punch so for them to go down to ten men was helpful but for some reason we didn`t use that to our advantage, sometimes it can be awkward playing against ten men because it opens the pitch up a bit and the ten men usually adopt a different mental approach to the game. Great subs at the right time had a massive effect and showed how much Bucks is learning and improving! What a fabulous looking pitch, it must be a joy to play football on it! ;D

Chelston it seemed to me that their winger had Nicho in his pocket and closed him down to great effect. Without time on the ball they shut off our best playmaker and we just seemed to pump the ball into the midfield where they gratefully received it! Paul Buckle was screaming at them to play the ball wide as soon as they were reduced to ten men but we just didn’t do it. With the introduction of Rose and Hemmings their winger had to mark them and not Nicho which meant with their pace and skill they and Nicho began to run the show.

In addition to his MoM award, Benyon made it into the League's Paper Division 2 team of the week - not bad for two tap ins ;D
For the first hour, the tactics were wrong with too many long balls played in to Benyon and Kee. The only time this worked was for the penalty when quick ball by Wroe and a very well timed run by Benyon split their defence.
I think Senda is looking a good signing and probably would work best with Zebs on that wing both for their attacking prowess but also he does press forward somewhat and may need some defensive cover that Zebs can provide.

I think as soon as they went down to ten men we should have changed shape to enhance wing play, to be fair to Bucks though he was shouting at the teams to spead the ball wide but they didn`t do it for what ever reason, this is why I recon a shape change could have supported wide play more and taken advantage of their ten men, still we got three points and at the end of the day that`s all I give a sh*t about right now! 8th from 13th is good in my book, a couple more and we`re back up in the mix at the top again!

Less money means less to spend on trying to entice players to Plainmoor. There's quite an interesting article in WSC (sent to me via a Facebook link, I'm down with the kids!) this morning about how Sunderland are still struggling to fill 10,000 seats at the stadium of light. The theory is that these fans were lost during the awful 15 point season they had a few years ago and despite all the money and signings since they haven't been able to win them back just yet. It makes you wonder if the Roberts season has done similar damage to us. We tend to have good crowds for the first home match of the season then they tail off a little bit. Whether it's down to austerity measures, people making lifestyle changes or supporters who've been left with little stomach for the ups and downs of a club like ours after the final Bateson years and the Roberts coup de grace is anybody's guess. Maybe it's the lure of early Xmas shopping. It was bitterly hard to keep watching the team during that era. Whether it was the 5-2 away defeat at Peterborough, that awful 1-0 New Year's day defeat between Bristol Rovers and Martin Horsell in torrential rain or the ludricrous substitution of Nathan Abbey at home to MK Dons. At one point I stuck my head well and truly in the sand and went to watch other teams in different countries in order to keep my love for football alive. The new consortium have done so much to put the all the wrongs right. We've got a good manager, a young team with no little talent and a new reserve and youth set up plus the new Grandstand on it's way. We just need 500-1000 more through the gates now.

It could just be that it is easier to fall out of love with your club than it is to fall back in love with it, given that Bateson and Roberts did all they could to drive people away, to get them back is a harder task than to push them away so what was done in a relatively short time will take a lot longer to reverse! Also did anyone spot the Morecambe transvestite stood under the Sparkworld sign in the away end, it was obviously cold as it looked like it had been shot in the back by a pair of Exersets, I mean it`s nips were like JCB starter buttons, the poor thing was freezing in that dress! I pointed it out to Eunan and he wanted to go straight over and ask it for it`s phone number! I`m not sure what shocked me more!

The crowd was 2732 on the corresponding weekend last year although just over 300 away fans distorts this slightly. Still 350 home fans down when we are so much higher up the league is very disappointing.

Just watched the Footy League show and can`t believe Zeb was compared to Ronaldo for his mazey run that fed Elliot for his tap-in, it was bloody nice to watch again though!

Budleigh - wrong word to call your friend maybe but my frustration with radio Devon boiled over yesterday. I appreciate that Exeter Chiefs are doing well but I have absolutely no interest in club rugby, and the stupid make it up rules that they have as they go along. He might be your friend , a good egg, but one thing he isn't is a radio commentator. I appreciate he was excited but squeaking in a high pitched voice like a hamster with his balls trapped in a vice when Exeter scored a try and completely talking over the other commentator - well not really professional to say the least. Call me a saddo but I like to listen to the commentary of the goals when radio devon reprise the action and speak to the managers just before six o'clock - predictably though even this was missing for the Torquay game. I suppose this is what you get when you have die hard fans as presenters for both City and Exeter and the Chiefs. Mind you talking of oafs - even Sparks was missing yesterday at the Plymouth match.

Ah Chris, was the average crowd not higher during the 1st BSP season though? It was around 3k even if you exclude the 2 Exeter matches that skew it slightly?

At the end of the day a couple of the factors that determine crowd size are a winning team and a high league position - as we improve attendance figures will increase BUT there are other influences that will also contribute to more people coming through the turnstiles.

Ah Chris, was the average crowd not higher during the 1st BSP season though? It was around 3k even if you exclude the 2 Exeter matches that skew it slightly? I think that was down to a bit of euphoria that we had a club to support again and that we had a wonderful start to the season with a hastily put together squad before it all started to unravel slightly before Raynergate. The Exeter play off semi defeat was the bitterest pill to swallow and then we had an abysmal start to the second season, the gradual return to form, that ridiculous Steve Woods situation and the wonderful Wembley win. Then we had a rude awakening back in League football. Perhaps it's just a lack of patience on the part of those "floating" supporters to stomach a defeat or a shite goaless draw along the way. Or is it a lack of encouragement by the hardcore who do go every week to persuade "floating" or first time supporters to come along as well because of a general dislike of the manager, his ruthlessness or his ambition. Everyone know's that there's a small but quite vocal element of "support" at Plainmoor who Buckle will never win over and will look at any negative aspect of any given game and moan about it to death. There's even some who won't give credit to him when things do go well. Certain people compare Buckle to Tisdale, Torquay's struggle back in the football league to Exeter's instant success, but Tisdale had much longer to construct a decent side and the side that battered us in the play off semi second leg were more or less ready to be a good league football side. We plainly weren't but, we gave it a bloody good go barely a season after staring at the apolcalypse. Exeter also have double the crowds we do. Imagine the players we could get down here on 4,500 crowds. If they slip any lower than 2,000 and stay there we'll be back in the Conference eventually and we'll only have ourselves to blame.

On the day, I was sure that Wroe had hit a delightful ball into Benyon's path for the penalty, but watching again I am pretty sure that a Morecambe player slid in to win the ball and inadvertently hit a perfectly-weighted through ball. Thanks for that!

It is also possible that other factors such as it being schools half term meant that some, like myself, were away and missed this game.
