This is the second of three successive midweek fixtures and the competition certainly provides the regular competitive football that has been missing to the squad in past seasons.
Although the thought of playing Forest Green reserves doesn't exactly set the pulse racing, a narrow 3 - 4 loss in their previous match at home to Bournemouth indicates in the first instant, that they probably can't be discounted as a second string pub team and in the second that more goals are likely to be scored than on Saturday last. ;D
Although, Buckle has generally kept to the same starting XI in the league, (apart from injuries), I feel that a couple of changes may now be in the offering and again this is the chance to impress!

We won 2-0 with goals from Eunan O`Kane and Saul Halpin. Saul was a good goal in the last few minutes a good header from a tight angle.

No match reports of note yet although quite a good report on dot com. Once again it reads like O'Kane had a good match and he can't be too far off making the starting XI on Saturday.

I think we’re best describing this one as a “useful workout” against a Forest Green side that included just one player who has appeared for their first team this season. Doing some research tonight, it looks as if several of the side are members of the academy at Hartpury College (an agricultural college in Gloucestershire which has diversified into sport) including three players from Ghana: goalkeeper James Nortei (who had a cracking game), David Accam (who posed a few problems down the right) and midfielder Isaac Shaze.
We created a number of chances – the majority falling to Billy Kee who also missed a penalty. But, in general, it was a case of using the game to explore different formations. I’m not too good with these new fangled line-ups but I’m sure it was 4-2-3-1 at one stage, possibly 3-4-3 at another and 4-4-2 towards the end. Most interesting to me was using Saul Halpin in a deeper and more central role for much of the game before playing him wider in the latter stages. I guess this is all part of developing a young player’s tactical awareness.

I was very encouraged by his attitude in an unfamiliar role up at Exeter - in stark contrast to Thomson's sulking display at right back. There is little doubt that Halpin has loads of ability, but you would question if he would ever be a "solid" enough player to be more than a "luxury player" or even an "impact sub". It is clear that a lot of work is going in to trying to ensure that he becomes a lot more than that. I hope that people don't expect the finished article overnight. He's on a three-year contract, isn't he?

Buckle seems to know how to bring a player through steadily so i'm confident that if Saul has the ability Bucks will get it out of him.

He's on a three-year contract, isn't he? i'm confident that if Saul has the ability Bucks will get it out of him. A three year contract indeed, and at just eighteen and already a strapping six foot tall, comfortable on either wing and able to take the ball past players; playing him in a more central role for this match is just another facet in his all round football development and education. Although some people are getting excited by the fact that the reserves are top of their league, such a position is really irrelevent in the greater scheme of things. It is the opportunity to offer players such as Saul Halpin, Damon Lathrope, Billy Kee and LRT the platform on which to put all their hard work on the training ground into practice alongside the very players they train with on a daily basis but are unlikely to get much First team opportunity to play alongside at the moment. I think the FACT that the manager moved quickly to alter the player's initial eighteen month professional contract to one of three years in the summer speaks volumes for Bucks' opinion of this player and his exciting potential. Another factor to take on board is that these days the average age of young professionals breaking into their clubs' First Teams has risen from what it used to be so that now the optimum age to expect to see such prospects breaking through is between 19 and 21; and Saul is still a year away from that threshold.

Don't think anyone is getting carried away with of topping the Reserve League, Merse - everyone knows there is more to reserve football than that. On the other hand it's surely a positive that both 'teams' are doing well, and yet another indication of how well things are being run at the club at the moment.

Whats wrong with fans getting excited about the Gulls progress on and off the field?
Whilst i understand we have put nothing in the cabinet yet, short term success is very important for maintaining all the things that will help you achieve the long term goals.
We have had precious few moments to be proud of in our past so i say lap it up, with dignity & modesty while you can. There will surely come a leaner time once again.
Release yourself from the comfort & pleasure of those Devonian shackles of apathy & criticism.
We are top of the league!
So what if that isn`t the case come May. It won`t be for the want of trying on the part of the staff.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with "getting excited", I said the reserves being top of their league was really irrelevent in the greater scheme of things meaning that the primary purpose of a reserve team is not to achieve results but to provide a platform for out of favour and developing players.
