Dave - do you seriously think that a fit Carlisle is going to be a bench warmer this season. On yesterdays cameo he is just waiting to regain his rightful starting place. Nothing against Stevens who I thought looked much improved, although he did tend to drift out the game slightly in the second half. Stevens is first choice at the moment because Buckle quite rightly isn't going to change a winning team but long term I cannot see him keeping Carlisle out of the starting line up.

..............I really like Buckles new empahasis on passing and passing... and if the move isnt on then pass again. That's classic tiki-taka, as practiced to perfection by various Spanish teams, most notably the national team and Barcelona. Pass and move when in possession to retain the ball and prevent the opposition doing anything with it, and press in numbers when the opposition do have the ball to prevent them doing anything with it, and also to get it back. Absolutley the way to play especially when you're a goal up in three minutes and the opposition a man short within eleven! That way, they will eventually have to chase the game, they will leave even more extra space and they will get hit on the break......................simples! If they don't, they lose one nil ~ even more simples!! Now what are we going to do about Wroe and his penalty taking?...............it's been diabolical, and he's been taking liberties with them for ages ~ drill the fecking thing into the bottom corner for Gawd's sake and stop trying to be all Arty Farty with them! Back to good first touch and keeping possession as a priority...............Anthony's not been offered a chance to go in at the Arsenal Academy (none of his development group, where he remains; have) but has taken up a couple of offers from other club's CoE's that came through the "grape vine" (i.e. coaches of his have recommended him to a League 1 club and a Championship club too. I wasn't too impressed with the standards of the League 1 club and have adopted a "wait and see" stance with them, and he's been at the Championship club for a first look this morning. It would be lovely to get an invitation back there, so we're waiting for the phone to ring! But one thing that struck me was the almost total absence at BOTH clubs of the "Tiki-Taka" philosophy and he's been left often, in acres of space; waiting to take the simple ball from a keeper or defender to no avail. They also seem on a completely different wavelength to the ball being knocked quickly back to where it came from in order to maintain possession and seek another opening. Something he is learning is that they skin cats in different ways in different places!

Dave - do you seriously think that a fit Carlisle is going to be a bench warmer this season. On yesterdays cameo he is just waiting to regain his rightful starting place. alunmeerkat, in a nutshell no, but when Bucks changed his mind after saying he would not now sign Wayne Carlisle even if he did regain full fitness, he stated h knew who his best two wingers were and Wayne would be more of a utility player here. Paul Buckle I’m sure will always pick the players he feels are best to do the job required and those decisions will be based on such things as the current players own form. Danny Stevens gave a man of the match first half performance and while he did not feature so much in the second half did more than enough to justify his selection and to start the next game. Should his form drop or Bucks feels he needs a rest then Wayne will get his starting chance and as I said about Muzzy on another thread, it will be up to Wayne to play so well Bucks would struggle to leave him out of the next game. That’s how it works in football, the player the manager thinks is his best winger dips in form and the winger on the bench comes on and plays out of his skin and keeps the place for the next game. Then the other winger might just have to be content starting on the bench and try and get his starting place back when he gets the chance again. I can see Mark Ellis getting dropped if he does not improve some aspects of his game and if then Charnock plays well, Ellis might have to wait his chance to get back into the starting eleven. Talking of young Mark I see Bucks turned down an offer from a first division club for him and while I heard that Swansea were interested in Elliot, it seems we are not in the market to sell any of our young players at this time and if we were they would come with a high price tags. Still feel Elliot was not at his best in yesterday’s game and I do agree Kee needs to get himself a bit fitter if he is to have a great impact in our games. Finally I was not watching the game from Mars, just trying to look over that wall on the popside to see as much of the pitch as I could. Well it’s a problem most short asses like me have.

For me and its only one mans opinion here, but the issue of the Penalty taking duty's is easily solved ... Just give them to Kevin and while were at it most of the Free Kicks also as Nicky has a tendency to hit those high and and wide, Now this is not meant as a go at belittling Nicky's Footballing skills its just I know for fact that Kev can hit them truer and sweeter
Oh and in reply to an earlier post Carlisle came on for a tiring and frustrated Billy Kee, Wayno looked and was fresh, fit and fast. Great to see him back.

The first thing I need to say was how great it was to meet Longeatongull today at the match and to pass on to him Carols thanks as she was so touched by his kindness and thoughtfulness for the gift he gave to me to give to her, its such acts of kindness that make this world a much better place than it can be otherwise at times. Dave it was an absolute pleasure to finally get the chance to say hi/thanks etc etc. Thanks to TFF it was great to also meet other members including Chelston and "the funny forker"!!!! My observations from a weekend back in Torbay............. 1/ First visit to Plainmoor for about 2 years.....thought crowd was bigger than official figure. Seemed quite packed everywhere. 2/ Nice to have a read of the programme and all the various fans iniatives going on. Does everyone know you can email your name in and appear in every programme? Also the "sponsor a goal" section which states "whether you would like to sponsor every goal that Tim Sills scores"......help...has anyone told the editor??? ;D 3/Match reports have all summed the performance up and as Merse mentioned the possesion football against 10 men was "text book" stuff.....brilliant to witness. We also attended an old neighbours party saturday evening....nice do in the Beefeater at the bottom of Belgrave Rd......was a nice venue and again my first visit. Well hope its not 2 years to my next visit but in the meantime I will take up my place on the away terraces with the Gulls on the road!!!!......roll on Southend. Thanks again Dave.....keep up the good work

longeatongull The reaction to this relatively untypical football from a Buckle team was fascinating to witness...particularly in my section of the Popside . I did on occasions wonder whether Leroy was making a guest appearance as team Manager for the day. Going back to the late seventies or early eighties we were (probably rightly) informed that while the British footballing public would accept the Dutch or other continental teams with their possession football & patient build up on TV for a few matches they wouldn't want to see that style of football week in week out from their local team. Fast & furious with the ball being pumped towards the penalty area at every opportunity ( Graham Taylor,Charles Hughes & his infamous POMO was the way we liked things) was more to our tastes. After a very impressive opening spell Bradford had struggled to contain us as a striking force even when they had eleven men so when they had one of their defenders sent off Taylor decided to send on another defender & instead played with just one up front rather than the two strikers of earlier (before the sending off). The free space therefore was at the back...Ellis & Branston with barely a man to mark between them. It was then relatively easy for the defence & midfielders to make the angles to knock the ball fore & back between themselves. This not only runs down the clock while you're in front, but just as importantly if you keep the ball rather than letting the opposition get hold of it they can't equalise. But this is where the Popside split & I was trying to work out just where the dividing line was....maybe it was on age. A couple of youngish lads stood behind me,& clearly not regulars as they were unsure of several of the players names, were enjoying the match, but midway through the second half one of them said "why's everyone so impatient?". I felt like turning around and saying "if you think this is impatient (& we were 2-0 up at the time) just imagine what it would be like if we were drawing or losing" The more I pondered this I did wonder whether young football fans brought up on a diet of Premier League with it's foreign stars & the vast amount of continental football available on their TV via satellite stations etc are far more accepting of a patient methodical build up than their older counterparts brought up on lower league english football. It's a natural inclination to want to build on a slender lead & to capitalise on a numerical advantage & as such we had a sizeable proportion of spectators urging the team to push forward with greater speed & urgency & another section instead nodding approvingly at the decision to keep the ball away from the opposition...even if that meant attacks weren't being mounted as often & as swiftly as we were used to seeing. It will be interesting to see how our style of play develops. Did we take possession football to an extreme (by Buckle's standards anyway) because we had the extra man or will it be a more permanent feature ? Whatever the answer , Saturday provided us with a good match, another fine result , and very acceptable position in the League table

Stevens is first choice at the moment because Buckle quite rightly isn't going to change a winning team but long term I cannot see him keeping Carlisle out of the starting line up. Yes I think he probably is, but then again thats no bad thing. An old manager of mine was always banging on about 'you are only as strong as your bench', well if we have a fit Carlisle on the Bench along with Potter, Gritton (at the moment, then Kee), Charnock, O'kane, Lathrope, Macklin, etc, then we have a strong bench. Besides a strong bench keeps the players in the team on their toes as they fight to hold onto their place and also gives very strong options when changes need to be made. I am a massive Carlisle fan and my heart would say that Carlisle would be in over Stevens every time, however realistically Stevens is quicker and probably more skillful, he also beats his man more often than Carlisle. Ideally Danny would start run his socks off for an hour, torment the left back and when he is tired after doing so much running (as he was yesterday) bring on Wayne.

As Budleigh suggests...Ebay would be your best bet. If you want to track down an old relic from Torquay's dim & distant past it's worth a look....even I was surprised by what I found on there tonight.

First match of the season and not at all the game i was expecting.
Whether it was the early goal or the sending off but Bradford lacked passion and determination. Theres normally a few heart stopping moments and the fear of conceding a soft goal, but there was none of that on Saturday. PT clearly agreed as he sent his players out again after the match before we`d left the family stand.
Utd were a pleasure to watch, their patience justified against a team that just sat back and tried to make it difficult to break down. Glad we kept our composure and didn`t resort to lumping high balls in.
These are great times to be a Gulls fan. I`m thoroughly enjoying the moment, however long it may last. Its good to hear clubs are already sniffing after our players and PB getting an invite to Man Utd. It shows we must be doing something right.
PB has built a well balanced, hard working and solid squad that looks comfortable on the ball and is difficult to beat. We are though not the finished article. This is not a criticism, but I would like to have seen the strikers offering themselves more to the man on the ball, by dropping or making angled runs to the corner. Too often the front line held their ground whilst the man on the ball was looking for options. Also we need to work on the strikers retaining possession and bringing other players in. Benyon & Kee too often lost possession or fell to the ground under a challenge. I was desperate for Kee to do well and put himself about, but his body language and moaning at the ref somehow didn`t look right. Not sure whether he is lacking in confidence, determination or fitness.
Well done to everyone connected with the gulls on the day. Proper job!
Point about the team spirit/attitude. Gritts unfortunately hit a young lad during the half time kick about. Both he and Potter showed real concern for the poor lad, spending quite a bit of time with him. Gritts even went over to his dad after the game. Well done both players.
