I understand that work on the Grandstand at Plainmoor will not start until the cricket season is over. There are also concerns over the level of security needed to stop the out-of-control youth-of-today from vandalising the new structure. All taken from the Torquay Times 26th August 1892.

Ha, things don't change that much! Would that be before we were at Cricketfield Road then? I thought it was later. With only 4 tiers of seating and less than 20 metres long, at least we have come a long way since then - there is no way that female ref changing rooms could have been squeezed in under that stand as well!

It was Torquay Athletic who built the first stand in 1892 - shown on the map posted by Barton here: torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=tufchistory&action=display&thread=3500Torquay United was still seven years away from conception. Tics played at Plainmoor for a season and a half from their formation in 1886 to being kicked out (for the first time) at Christmas 1887. They then had half a season at Shiphay, two at the Rec, one at Paignton Cycle Track and one back at the Rec before returning to Plainmoor for the 1892-93 season. I suppose they needed the new stand after getting used to the relatively palatial surroundings at the Rec. Soccer wasn't too far away in the 1892-93 season. Torquay YMCA played on the field on the other side of Warbro Road.
