I know we've often got other things on our minds midweek as TUFC fans, but is this the most over-hyped load of nonsense in world football?
Ignoring the often pointed out fact that most of the teams aren't champions, and neither is the competition a league.................it bores me for the following reasons:
- It seems to go on forever. We're still at the quarter final stage, and it's mid-April. - Barcelona. As much as their style of play is admirable, the w**k-fest which greets every one of their games is beyond irritating. - The League 2 playoff final will now take place at Old Trafford. No bad thing in itself, but the principle of it grates. - Midweek games that give many lower-league fans yet another excuse to stay at home on a winter Tuesday night.
Surely the level of interest in this competition can only fall?

I agree, it is dross.
I much preferred the old European Cup as a straight knock out cup. Even though I don't like Liverpool, I loved watching Liverpool, Nottingham Forest etc in 70s and 80s in the European Cup
it seems to be a half way house to keep Blatter etc happy because what they really want is a European League

I find it difficult to raise any enthusiasm for this elitist all about money tripe. It's particularly galling that they KO the games at the same time as the smaller clubs. It's a disgrace and I will have no part of it. They will not get my marketing dollar or endorsemnet and the more of us that boycott the better.

Completely bored by it, although I had to watch the Spurs game to report on it for work last night.
The most amazing thing - UEFA forced Spurs to completely change their camera angles for the Real Madrid second-leg - the reason? the previous angles did not allow for UEFA's advertising hoardings to be shown enough!
The sooner Platini and his mates, and then Blatter and his mates at FIFA get stuffed, the better it will be for the sport.
Until then, consider me lower-league football only. I don't watch the Premier League at home anymore anyway.

They may've changed the camera angles, but it still allowed the world to see what a load of cheats we have in the game.
If Gareth Bale wants to be considered a true great when his career finally comes to an end he needs to cut out the 'going down in the penalty box with a leg trailing across the defenders' routine... Blatant cheating and he should be hauled before the Spurs management and given the riot act.
I bet if you asked him if, when he plays golf whether he'd move his ball in the rough if he knew no one was watching, he'd say no... but why would you believe the toe-rag... cheating is cheating and if you do it in one sport you'll do it in any...
Winning a game by cheating means you haven't actually won the contest. Therefore there is no point in partaking in it... When will these delinquents understand this?

Too much money involved, I call it the Chumpions League, just like the Premiershite, full of over paid over hyped sink estate fodder like Rooney, no class!

You sound like Brian Clough on his first team talk with the Leeds United players! ;D

I find it hard to tolerate deliberate cheating within sport... To me it devalues any contest and therefore makes the playing of it, and the meaning for doing so, irrelevant.

Bale wasn't the only culprit and there were a few appeals for penaltys that had little foundation.
In the closing stages we had a close up of Jose Mourinho smiling & shaking his head as another Tottenham player tried a hopeful tumble. If we focus soley on Bale, I couldn't help ponder on how times have changed, seeing a Portugese manager of a Spanish Club shaking his head at the blatant cheating of a British player in a British team. A scenario difficult to comprehend only a few decades ago when we looked on in disgust & disbelief at the antics of foreign players.
Bale being a young lad, I wonder what his views on sportsmanship would be if he was rising through the ranks as a young golfer rather than as a footballer ? If he admitted he had helped win his Golf Club a trophy by cheating what reaction would he get from Club members ? Growing up as a young professional footballer he will be only too aware of the reaction from Management, fellow players & supporters that greets the the 'winning' of a penalty.
Over the two legs Spurs were well beaten. Only the introduction of the AV voting system to football would have seen Tottenham declared the winners of that tie.

Folk think I'm mad when they ask are you watching the Man Utd v Chelsea game and I say "nope" - rather watch Lewis or Law and Order on one of the other channels.
Give me 90 minutes at Plainmoor anytime.

We've had the cheating debate before, but I shall say again that I don't have the massive problems others have with it. If nobody cheated then there'd be almost no need for a referee or their assistants, except to resolve disputes where players genuinely didn't know what happened. This might be heaven for some people, but not for me. I love the controversy it creates and enjoy the howls of indignation and tantrums that follow. Would World Cup folklore be the same without Maradona's sublime piece of skullduggery against England? Would TUFC have received half the decisions in their favour over the last 2 years if Elliot Benyon hadn't gone down every time a defender so much as breathed on him? Of course not. Let's get off our high horses and revel in the fun instead

So Lambie... do you play golf? Not since being chased into the Cairngorms by an angry man in a kilt after forgetting to chip into the course honesty box on a cold Tuesday afternoon in February, no I can't honestly condone cheating in all walks of life. It's well known that the man who carries a ball up his sleeve on the golf course will soon be discovered as the man who goes to the toilet when it's his round in the club house. Treat others as one would like be treated and all that. On the other hand, I love watching cheats from a distance. Watching a cheat prosper from the sidelines is one of life's guiltless pleasures!

Therefore there is no point in partaking in it... When will these delinquents understand this? They never will understand it but perhaps more importantly, they never have understood it. I would contend that there was far more cheating in the past but there were not enough cameras to pick up the reality of what was going on. I recently re-read The Soccer Tribe (Desmond Morris - 1981) and he devotes a whole chapter to this subject. A lot of stuff mentioned in there just could not happen with the level of camera coverage existing today. The stuff that went on with hotels and travel also makes very interesting reading.
