There once was a time when good old fashion shoulder barges were part and parcel Of our game, even goals were given, If a player barged the keeper and the ball over the line.
Was there more injuries In those days? I can't really answer that, only to say I was never aware that injuries were a major problem back then. I would think we get more these days, football boots do not Offer the protection they once did and Its my view that players are so over tuned, they are more prone to strains and pulls.
Todays game In many ways now seems somewhat tame, keepers are far to much over protected and shoulder barges etc now always result In free kicks.I watched the Man U game yesterday and saw a player who put In a fair challenge get a yellow card. Yes the ref got It wrong, but Its challenges like those that are getting pulled up far too often.
While we never want to see the two footed challenges, where the player has his feet Of the floor, the ones that are likely to cause serious injury, I think other more robust challenges should be allowed to be part Of the modern game.It was and still should be a contact sport, so lets have some contact, before much Of the appeal Of the game gets lost.
What sort Of challenges that may be now outlawed do you think should still be a part Of the game?

As I no longer possess a pair of match boots, I was forced to borrow a pair to play in a "Dads v Lads" game a while ago and in the short time since I last played in any form of organised football (5years) I was appalled at the craven way style and saleability have overtaken practicality in the manufacture of what is said and done the tools of the trade of the professional footballer. Forget the fact that they were bright yellow and made me feel (and look) like a duck out of water, they were finished in a shiny, slippery "platicised" surface that offered no purchase on the ball whatsoever and the ridiculous blades left me feeling as if my feet were about to turn over at any time. No wonder there are so many"metatarsal" injuries nowadays and the laws of the game have been shamelessly misinterpreted by that pouf Platini so as to render the old "English" way of playing redundant; that the game has totally changed in that short time. Before you (or I) shout that someone has been unfairly penalised Dave, we have to avail ourselves of the current interpretations of the Laws of the Game as laid down by FIFA and then you might well find that YOU were wrong and the ref CORRECT.No longer is "winning the ball first" an all encompassing free pass to clatter an opponent, no longer is "intent" of any relevance when poor technique causes an infringement of the laws. THAT'S why the game has changed, and THAT'S why I'm relieved I had my time playing when I did and for that matter my time refereeing also; it definitely isn't the game you and I grew up to love!

The forum Is willing to offer a cash reward to anyone who can put up a photo Of Merse wearing yellow boots one can only imagine what he looked like. Merse when every player who Is part Of the commentary team, Or the ones who do the studio work, all say that was never a foul etc, then you really have to wonder just why so many tackles that were once allowed, now all seem to be banned. If you believe that things go full cycle, then maybe the game will one day resort back to the way It was. Just like the days Merse, when football was played the way Its meant to be played.

Alas, I can only imagine too; as I'm so out of shape these days I can't see my feet directly with my own eyes and have to pray that I've in fact got matching footwear on. Someone commented that with a figure like mine, I must have thought it was a fancy dress do and come as an Easter Egg! I said I'd come as Ferenc Puskas to which they replied that there was a slight skill difference. "I know all about that" I said ..............."I'm two footed"
