I am a great believer in tradition when it comes to football. For example I despise Sunday and evening matches as feel football belongs at 3pm on a Saturday. I find players brightly colored boots irritating as think it should be compulsory to wear black boots. I wont get started on scarves and gloves being worn by players although I don't have an issue with keepers wearing a cap.
The FA cup in my opinion is an institution. It's the oldest cup competition in the world. A famous old trophy my team have won 4 times.
Attendances for the cup are falling. To be fair I myself have no desire to go to the matches if its just another game against a team we will already play twice in the league anyway so I can't complain. What I do dislike however is how the FA cup is becoming more about revenue and losing its prestige.
1st of all the kick offs are all over the place. We have Sundays, evenings, lunchtimes mainly because of tv rights.
Then they take away the semi finals from traditional grounds such as Old Trafford, Hillsbourgh and Villa Park and move them to Wembley. This is just to make more money for the FA and in my opinion takes away the gloss of reaching the final even if it does give all 4 semi final fans a chance to go.
Now there is talk of moving the final from its traditional 3pm slot to an evening slot. Why I ask you? The FA reckon it will help with attendances! PAH! It's another chance to make money from TV rights.
Finally what's with having the final before the end of the season?
The FA cup has gone from a distinguished trophy worth winning to a prop used on TV.
I know times have to change but just occasionally it's nice if things stay how they should be.
