Newton Abbot football club are In trouble with the league, for failing to fulfil a fixture against Wadebridge, In the Premier Division of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League.
Nothing to do with not having enough players Or anything like that, It was because players had not been paid for three weeks. A vote was taken when the players were due to travel to Wadebridge and only three voted to travel.
The question Is really that as this should be amateur football, why was payments ever introduced, while the players do not receive a wage as such, they do get so much a game in expenses. I believe It works out around £50 a game for most clubs.
While this Is not a great sum Of money and I'm sure some clubs will offer as much as possible, to attract the best players, what happened to just wanting to play football at the highest local level and not expect payment for doing so.
While teams in the Premier Division of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League, will need to travel greater distances than a team playing in the South Devon League, surly there would be a better and cheaper way to get players to an away match.
I know such clubs will need to have sponsorship to meet the players expenses as most games are only watched by around 30 people and not all Of them would have paid on the gate.So It really must be a struggle to get enough money In to try and run a club, when you consider all the other costs that are involved.
I think In the times we are In, maybe Its time amateur clubs were just that and stopped having players expenses to pay, my view Is that any player should be happy, just to be able to be good enough to get the chance to play for the better local teams.

Dave, this brings up a number of issues worthy of discussion. Firstly though, they have to should absolutely throw the book at the players as well as the club. EVERY single one of the players should be banned from playing for any other club for a certain period of time. I say 90 days minimum. Harsh?? Certainly not. People cant just decide not to turn up, whatever their reasoning is, and for it being so petty as to have not received their 'traveling expenses' then they should be punished, financially and with a ban. They need to be made an example of to stop others thinking that they can do the same, which could lead to a complete breakdown in discipline and have a serious knock on effect to amateur football. Not bothering to turn up because they weren't getting paid enough. Good job the guys on D-Day didn't adopt a similar attitude!!! Its not like they are professional, its not their job, they are not even semi pro, yet they sound more like pampered premiership players. These guys need to take a serious look at themselves and question their own personal qualities, commitment, attitude etc Whinging about money. For the love of good do we not play amateur football for the love of the game and the enjoyment it brings?? They may have to travel a bit further for their games, but it cost me less than £50 to get to Rushden and back on Sunday, and I didn't even get a game.

A little bird has told me this club may not be able to carry on, (secrets again It pisses you Off ;D)I can't go in to detail but money Is a big part Of the problem.
I do wonder as I said how clubs with no real income can really pay out such expensives. I did talk to a player who has just left that club, he said he was unhappy because the players only talked about what money they could get, while he went there just to play football.
amateur should mean just that and If we do not have players at this level, only playing because they just love to play and only are In It for what cash they can get out, then I really fear for local football.

Just one thing, there is no such thing as "amateur football" - and there hasn't been for years. But yes, you're right; if I was the person who had underwritten their expenses up till now; I would be telling them to feck right off and point out to them how few people are actually interested in coming along to watch them play in any case...................bunch of stupid fickwuts!!!!
