Due mainly to our lost games recently caused by the weather, we discussed the possibility of summer football and all the pros and cons of making the switch. The world cup got mentioned and while it only takes place every four years, it is held in the summer months.
I think most football fans and especially English ones, were shocked and horrified that Qatar was chosen to hold the world cup in 2022. It does seem it’s very likely that some of the world cup games will talk place in other middle east countries as many of Qatar's neighbours want to host games themselves. But the Qatar football organisation would have to ask Fifa for this to happen and then Fifa would have to make a ruling on it.
What many football fans said at the time when the 2022 world cup was awarded to Qatar that it was just too hot there during the summer months to play football. During June and July the temperatures in Qatar can top 40C.
Well Sepp Blatter has come up with an answer and it now looks very likely the 2022 would cup will be played during the winter months probably in January when the temperatures will be much lower in Qatar. He even has stated that playing the world cup in the winter would open the World Cup to countries where they can never play it in June and July because it's never the right period of time
It was not a part of Qatar’s bid to host the world cup during the winter, but the Fifa executive committee is entitled to change anything that was in their bid. But the Fifa executive committee were well aware of the temperatures in Qatar during June and July, so I wonder how much a part the fact they want to open the world cup to other countries, they choose Qatar and already had secret plans to move the competition to winter.
Our on wonderful FA seems to have gone into its shell and as had nothing much to say on the matter so far, but the premiership are making their feelings known and may well appose such a move to the winter. I suppose what will be created in effect will be a winter break in our own football league, something we have discussed the possibility’s of on here. I would imagine if the premiership is going to be shut down as many of their players will be taking part in the world cup, then all the other English leagues will be as well.
It would be interesting to see what impact the winter break would have here in the UK and I suppose it’s possible it could mark the way forward for having a permanent winter break in English football, it was felt it turned out to be something that was in fact a good thing for many of the reasons we have discussed already.
Meanwhile, Blatter has apologised for saying gay fans should "refrain from sexual activity" if they go to the World Cup in Qatar, homosexuality is illegal in the Middle East state and Blatter's original comments provoked outrage among gay rights groups who said he should apologise or resign. But Blatter told a press conference: "It was not my intention and never will be my intention to go into any discrimination.
Being gay is no longer illegal in this country and most others I would imagine and I’m sure most gay people would not choose countries like Qatar as their holiday destinations. I find myself asking due to the fact being gay is illegal in Qatar and therefore most possibly a punishable offence, why such countries should be allowed to host the world cup.
I’m sure there are many gay football fans that would want to go to the world cup in 2022 and are they likely to be charged and punished if they get caught in Qatar doing something they are free to do in nearly all the rest of the world. It does seem to me to be a case of discrimination against gay people.
I fully understand and agree with the old saying when in Rome do what the Romans do, (but that does not seem to happen here in the UK these days) but my view is that Qatar put in a bid to hold a world event and has to expect that some football fans who would want to attend it might be gay.
Those who choose to go would only be going for the football and as I said with the laws against homosexuality would not choose to go to that country for any other reason what so ever.
The question I’m asking is should Fifa had made it clear to Qatar that if they wanted to host the world cup then during the time the event was taking place, it had to relax some of its laws and especially the one concerning homosexuality.
Its fine wanting to open up the world cup to many other countries but surely those countries would have to understand that as it was a major world football event that would be attended by people from nearly every other country in the world, some of their laws would need to be looked at and not enforced while the event was taking place.
As far as I’m concerned failure to agree to such terms would mean they would not be allowed to put in a bid to host the world cup end of. It should not be a condition of any football fan who wanted to attend a world cup football event; they have to conform to laws that were made in the dark ages and no longer apply in most modern societies.
