Well there’s no such thing as a blank Saturday when you have a wife and two kids. The Devon Senior Cup - the Trophy I took over 100 names from last week- second round ties were being contested this weekend. Before my lads were given the option to watch this game, we had all been ushered out of the door and on our way to Osborne Park to see Newton 66, take on P&D League outfit Marjons. It was a good game to watch, especially with radio Devon in one ear and ex Westcontry T.V pundit, Jeff Welch in the other. A lifelong Barrow fan and a really nice guy, but the reason he was there remains a mystery to me. A dodgy pen for the home team early on, countless marginal off-side decisions that did not go down well with the visitors, end to end stuff, and everything else that you get with park footie. It was 3-3 after 90 minutes, 4-4 after 120 minutes, and a penalty shoot-out. 9 of the 10 penalties were scored, with the only failure being Marjons fourth spot kick and even that hit the underside of the bar before bouncing on the line and away from the goal. A few photos: Train spotting with the birds before the game. Half time entertainment

Brilliant to see up to date pics of a place that played a huge part of my formative years ~ Ossie Park! Gone is the power station to be replaced in part by what looks like an all weather training area, and do my eyes tell me that '66 now have a nice club house and dressing rooms? Otherwise those shots are almost timeless from thirty years ago. ...................and how much do those houses in Buckland View go for these days? The first house (very similar to those) I ever bought was in Netley Road in 1975. It cost me £8,000 and I sold it after a couple of years to a family who I believe still live in it to this day and they were only too pleased to move from around that area off The Avenue as they had been flooded out ~ Ronnie Ellis (who is a relative of mine anyway) and his wife, you must know them. That area was your family's neck of the woods too wasn't it?

Great photos Keyberry. You could almost imagine Plainmoor looking similar without the stands in place.

Am I right in thinking this picture is taken from just in front of where the proposed cycle bridge will be crossing the river? Town Quay to the Passage House with an anticipated extension through to Teignmouth. Good to see the Devon Senior Cup being monitored on these pages although I'll confess to watching a match in a slightly more senior competition yesterday - the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round tie between Havant & Waterlooville and Dorchester. 4-1 to the home side who had a couple of tidy strikers in Manny Williams and Mustafa Tiryaki together with too reasonably well-known midfielders: Ian Selley and Sammy Igoe. Both number threes - Paul Hinselwood and Kyle Critchell - had Torquay United connections as does Mark Jermyn, now in his testimonial year and approaching five hundred games for Dorchester. Dejan Stefanovic - ex-Pompey, etc - was a non-playing substitute for Havant. Westleigh Park is neat and functional with a main stand (which straddles the half-way line without extending for the full length of the pitch) and three identical covered sheds in the style of the popular side at Plainmoor, albeit smaller. Havant are well-supported by Conference South standards - 700 there yesterday - and you'd think that they have Conference National potential. Although Havant is a sizeable town that's still a good level of support given the town grew as a result of Portsmouth overspill. And, earlier in the week, I was in North Huish to hand in the nomination forms for the position of Village Idiot (see these columns from a week or two ago when a certain poster announced his candidature). Should a seconder be required I suggest looking in the visitor's book at the parish church. Back to Newton Abbot football, Buckland v Plymouth Parkway looks a tasty prospect for Tuesday evening...

Nick the arrow on the map shows where the picture was taken from, it was a place many Newton boys would go to and and there are in fact two bridges side by side one for the up line and one for the down line and as kids we would walk between the two bridges with a foot on each one to get across the river and onto the race track to get into stock car racing for free as we sure never had the money as kids to pay to watch the racing.

Did you see my name written in the visitors book Nick? did you think the church looked in very poor condition inside? Pictures of the outside of the church can be seen on this thread www.torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=fansphoto&action=display&thread=6313

Bugger me Brian if you keep putting up these sort of pictures you will make that bloke merse even more homesick and he might then move back here so maybe best to quite while you are ahead. Merse you will remember the old changing rooms that were across the road and also the yards etc that were behind them up to Quay Road. The whole lot was knocked down and a very large block of flats were built from the park to Quay Road in the same sort of brickwork that the buildings are in Brains pictures. I could not believe how long it took to build that block of flats and the last time I looked there were many still unsold, I guess the picture that shows the players on the steps is the back of this block of flats and changing rooms were included as a requirement for being able to build the flats on that site.

I doubt if Merse will ever return to 'Third World Devon' do you? Anyway, the changing rooms and clubroom did take a long time to build but it was well worth the wait. When I was a 66 player during the 90's, the clubs ambitious plans to re-locate were thwarted by the local council, so what they have there now is probably the best they could have got in return for the very small plot of land owned. www.clubwebsite.co.uk/newton66/photo_gallery.pl?album=41266 No doubt some would disagree with me, but without exclusive use of a pitch with a surface on which dogs regularly flush their bowels, a bigger project would have been foolish. IMO, Having a fit for purpose changing facility and clubroom, better than many SDL premier division clubs, isn't that bad at all.

I doubt if Merse will ever return to 'Third World Devon' do you? Looking at that '66 site and the article about the formation of the club, it's good to be reminded of three of the four founders I knew well: Ivan Rumbelow, Ron Stancombe and Alan French. The club was (like Newton Rangers) an off shoot of a Newton Spurs contingent who wanted to ensure they got regular South Devon League football, and (again like Rangers) their roots were in the Broadlands area of NA; and again like Rangers they played origninally at Bakers Park ~ the incumbents of Osborne Park at the time where Milber United whom Ivan also helped form from amongst a group of old Newton Abbot Grammar School boys. In fact I would say Ivan Rumbelow should be feted as the "Lord Kinnaird" of South Devon football for all this plus of course his long term commitment to Liverton United FC where for many years he was the inspiration and driving force along with Don Pady and where he is now rightfully Club President. I've had the pleasure of enjoying a very short time playing at Newton '66 where I believe I was signed to replace an ageing Terry Healy, but only succeeded in provoking the old guy into prolonging his playing career and in turn leading me to move myself to Liverton. Torquay United director Brian Palk was a very accomplished defender in that '66 side too. Looking at the list of players of the year I see the Allen family name cropping up, but more from "my time" the names of Graham Huddison, Keith Forsythe, Steve Uppington, Alec Leggatt (in fact Alec WAS a pro' at Ipswich Town in his youth)and John England (indeed, John too played semi pro' for Bodmin Town too) would ALL have been semi pro' material had it been available to them to earn a few bob out of the game at that time. Did Billy Fisher never get a PotY award then? Surprising; and I remember too one of the all time hard men of South Devon football ~ Bob Stone ~ being the rock of their defence for many years. People think Branston's hard..................you should have tangled with Fisher and Stone guys, they would chew you up and shite you out as Maltesers!

Blimey..................more name's from the past reading further into that '66 site: Barry Henley, Barry Briscoe (mad goalie par excellence!) Terry Waye (legend) Billy the Fish, Micky Dore (the tiniest terror you ever did see, and later a very good referee!) Cameron Hill ~ long time childhood friend of Stefano and I who was my fellow stow away on many a bunk up north on the trains to see some decent football in the north and Midlands! Later Chairman of Newton Abbot FC and now living in Derbyshire. Cameron's dad Arthur was an ex pat Rangers fan from Scotland who was a very useful Newton Spurs striker in the early sixties and died tragically young before he was forty. Old smoothie Paul (Freda) Cayless ~ ladies hairdresser, good South Devon CC cricketer and super striker and of course Keyberrygull's big Bro' Rockie Allen not forgetting former Plainmoor legend Steve Cooper either!
