I’m beginning to think its me who is jinking every football match I watch lately as even Marldon now seem to lose when I watch them and this was a team who seemed could not lose, or did not know how to lose.
Today’s match was played at Stoodley Knowle a delightful part of Torbay near Kent’s Cavern and the pitch is not too bad but does slope toward each goal and also from the middle to both touch lines and its worse on one side than it is the other. Still not to bad for a Torquay pitch and the only problem with the pitch today was it was very boggy and sticky making any good play almost impossible.
Marldon started the much better team and took the lead with a wonder goal. We have all seen them on local parks before and when they happen the only shame is you never get to watch again the goal on any replay. The ball came out of Cory’s box and a Marldon player just hit it from about 40 yards out and it screamed into the top corner.
After the goal Marldon were still playing the better football but wanted to play far to many passes on a pitch not suited to that sort of game and time after time failed to get the ball to Ant Roach who made run after run and every time for nothing as his team mates simply lost the ball as they got near the box.
The game was to see a complete turn around on the half hour mark, a Marldon defender tripped the Cory forward in the box and the penalty was converted and then Marldon just started conceding the midfield to Cory and once again went missing in defence and did not learn any lessons from Cory’s second goal as all the other goals that Cory scored were carbon copies of goal number two.
A long high punt from the back saw the Cory forward run onto the ball as the center half was missing somewhere and he was them on a aone on one with the keeper and coolly slotted the ball past him. Goal number three for Cory came from the same long punt and will the same result and the first half ended with Cory winning by three goals to one.
Three minutes into the second half and Marldon pulled a goal back, it came from a free kick out wide on the right and was headed in and I felt then not only was a comeback on the cards, but Marldon would go on and win the game. Only a few minutes later that caught out again with the same long ball punt that had undone the defence twice before and Cory scored their forth goal.
Marldon needed to start hitting their front two much quicker, but over played the ball in midfield and lost the ball time after time and Ant Roach had to start drifting out toward the wing just in the hope of getting the ball. He did impress me with two very smart turns that left his marker for dead and one resulted in a good shot being saved low down and the other a good ball into the box that the defender did well to get a boot on it and away to safety.
Mardon then got a third goal, the right winger burst into the box and shot across the keeper into the far left hand corner, surely now Marldon would get the next goal. Well they did not and yes it was another long ball punt that resulted in yet another one on one with the Marldon keeper who got beat for the fifth time and the final score ended up Cory 5 Marldon 3. Still an enjoyable afternoon out in the fresh air and a very rare game where goal ace Ant Roach did not get on the score sheet, but then to do so he really needs to have some service as any striker does

Yes it was a foul ref.
